...aren't about invading Normandy/France, D-Day, Italy or even Stalingrad?

I know a few but looking for other suggestions; particularly set early to mid war (1939-1943), Africa, Middle East, Balkans etc., something that hasn't been done to death.

Doesn't have to be American made or American army focused.

Rommel has the British in retreat on his way to the Suez Canal. All that stands in his way is Tobruk, held by a vastly out numbered force of Australian troops. Richard Burton leads these troops on daring raids against Rommel, keeping him off balance as they earn the nickname 'The Desert Rats'.

When Trumpets Fade

The Desert Fox

Five Graves to Cairo

Tobruk

(There are a shite ton either set in or focused on Africa - I mean, technically Casablanca meets this criteria.)

And, are we avoiding the entire Pacific Theater?

If you're looking for something really different, watch The 9th Company:

a 2005 Russian war film directed by Fedor Bondarchuk and set during the Soviet–Afghan War. The film is loosely based on a real-life battle that took place at Elevation 3234 in early 1988, during the last large-scale Soviet military operation (Magistral) in Afghanistan.

If you don’t mind subtitles, these are some of my favorites-

Submarine movie. It’s a very gritty look into the life of a German U-boat. Also it’s like four hours long.

One of the best Hitler portrayals there is. Period. About his last days, and you’ve probably seen the YouTube parodies.

Netherlands spy movie. This is very much worth the watch. High production value.

(I always mention this but I don't understand why Come and See isn't more well known. Perhaps because it's a Russian film. But it's one of the best war films ever made, period.)

The Four Days of Naples (1962)
quote:

During World War II, the people of Naples are forcibly transported to slave-labor camps by the occupying Germans. In September 1943 they revolt against the invaders, fighting them house-by-house armed with any weapon they can find.

One of the great WWII films, Oscar-nominated as best foreign language film, and for its screenplay.

Pay special attention to how the film shows isolated figures in empty, desolate urban spaces -- a technique dating back to Eisenstein, later to be used by post-apocalyptic movies and even video games.

I grew up with that movie because we owned it on VHS...watched it so many times.

Almost as much as Empire Strikes Back.

Seriously a forgotten movie.
