During the Japanese invasion of the Philippines, an assorted group of refugees, including an American soldier, an Army nurse, a priest and a group of local children, try to make their getaway aboard a rattletrap, creaky bus.

Underappreciated movie which successfully combines action and romance

Memphis Belle - about a B-17 Bomber in WWII that has one mission left before the crew gets to go home (they had to complete 25 missions before being discharged).

It isn't the exact true story of the real B-17 named Memphis Belle, but it is still a great movie.

A Bridge Over the River Kwai.

It's more than a little dishonest to add drama. None of the British POWS quislinged like in the movie. Pretty much all the POWS sabotaged the project as much as slaves could through the introduction of termites, shoddy workmanship, and other destruction of material.

I really like The Great Raid, although it's not in the European Theater or in the middle of the war. I feel like it's overlooked.

Supposedly most POWs who worked on the bridge IRL hated the film

Land of Mine; The film is inspired by real events and tells the story of German prisoners of war sent to clear land mines in Denmark after World War II. It is estimated that over 2,000 German soldiers, including numerous teenagers, were forced, against the regulations of the Geneva Conventions, to remove mines, with nearly half of them either getting killed or losing their limbs to explosions. (Amazon Prime)

The Resistance Banker; The film is based on the life of banker Walraven van Hall, who financed the Dutch resistance during the Second World War. (Netflix)

They did, even the actors like Guinness were more in it for a paycheck.

It's one of those fantastic things. The writer was a Frenchman, Pierre Boulle, who was very honest that the Guinness character was based on an amalgamation of French officers. So basically it was a way for him to call out his fellow countrymen while keeping the blame foreign. Of course the British don't see it that way.

He later gave us the short story basis of Planet of the Apes, so made up for it a little.

Patton is more about Patton himself than the war. All time classic.
