The answer is always her.

Because she's not a traditional boogeyman.

But destroys lives willingly while believing she's helping. She's that fine line of unspoken incompassionate evil that exists IRL.

Plus she won an Oscar...and apparently was one of the sweetest people in the business.

Surprised this thread has gone three pages without someone mentioning Warden Norton from Shawshank.

I don’t even see him as a real villain. He usually has the town’s best interests at heart. A bit unethical sure. But not a villain.

This whole scene:

All.

On the level of Nate Oates.

My opinion is that Darth Vader is the greatest villain in any movie ever

At least until they retconned him in the prequel.

Hitchcock villains deserve a mention:

Bruno Antony - Strangers on a Train
Mrs. Danvers - Rebecca
Norman Bates - Psycho

Villains are done at their best when they’re the heroes of their own stories and not just evil because evil.

She also plays a pretty bad villain as the grandmother in Flowers in the Attic.

Darth Vader is not a villain. He is just trying to keep the empire together. You gotta do what you gotta do.
