With every re-watch, I look forward to The Breaking Point and Spears' run and his conversation with Lipton. Then The Last Patrol lulls me back into being a passive viewer. Then I get to Why We Fight, and Perconte comes thundering through the woods, and I can't remember why he's in a panic, and then the heavy memory sets in.

I finished it last night.

I agree what a few of you have already said. It's the best TV series of all time. Every episode is perfect.

I've never watched the Pacific series, but heard it wasn't as good. What say the M/TV board?

It's very very very good IMO...it's not as good as Band of Brothers due to it not being the best mini series ever made.

The Real Life and Sad Ending of Herbert Sobel

Thanks for posting that link. I've mentioned it a couple times on here when BoB discussion comes up, but I lived in Thailand and worked with a guy named Michael Sobel. It didn't even register until I watched a repeat of the show and I said to my gf at the time, that's Michael's last name and she said oh yeah he mentioned something about his dad in the war. I was blown away. I didn't work with him at this point and didn't get but one discussion with him about all of it but he was pretty even-keeled about it and how he was portrayed. You could tell he didn't like it, but he also knew his dad.

It’s really good but not BoB. Definitely worth the watch though. That episode on alligator creek is eye opening.

That's the point. Through no fault of his own he is viewed as late comer/outsider to the men. He can't help when he was born. He just wanted to get into a war he had been looking toward for years.

That's why I think casting him, being Tom Hank's son, was actually inspired. People view that as nepotism which it was so as a viewer you already view the him with circumspect.

I did not know that was Tom Hanks son when I first watched BoB. So I certainly did not make that connection. Must have been one of his early roles, no?

I’m not sure what he may have done wrong? Seems to me he went and did his duty. Easy Co. had to have been used to replacements by then. I don’t think the show portrayed him in a bad light. What am I missing?

I thought it was exceptional. It wasn’t perfect like BOB probably because it wasn’t focused on a single company in a single book written by one author.

The Pacific covered multiple companies and several regiments and synthesized Eugene Sledge’s and Robert Leckie’s books, other memoirs and a book about Iwo Jima, Red Blood, Black Sand, from which a lot of the John Basilone material was derived.

Well worth watching.

Second was the Spears stories. They were so outlandish and they were scared about legal issues that might come from publishing it all. Winters called Spears and asked him if he did those things. Spears said yes. Winters told him the publishers were hesitant to publish all of it. Spears told Winters he could write them a letter saying it was all true.

I read somewhere, that Spears refused to go to the reunions in Europe because he was afraid he would be proscuted for war crimes. No one in the company ever confirmed or denied what Spears did. However, the "rumors" about him were known and easy company was very protective of him after the war.

ETA: Actually it was on a podcast about band of brothers. Good listen, 10 or 11 episodes and they interview an actor to talk about each episode, the real life training, and the real life soldiers who they were portraying.

There are a lot of inaccuracies because they are based on guy's recollections 40-50 years later.

Not just the Blithe one, where he didn't actually die in 1948 but served in Korea.

Leibgott, for instance...

Likely wasn't actually Jewish. He disappeared for 3 years after the war (likely homeless), and then remerged in California, got a job, started a family, never went to a single reunion or event. Died in 92.

His family saw BoB and contacted Guarnere and some of the guys.

They claimed he raised them all Catholic and as far as they knew, his parents were Catholic as well. (Its possible his mother may have been of Jewish descent).

Also never worked as a cab driver as far as his family knew.

I am surprised that the actor who played Spears didn't go on to be a big star. He had leading man looks (no homo) and played an absolutely iconic character in what many regard as the greatest series ever. Seemed like a natural springboard to major stardom.

Definitely worth watching. The fact that its constantly compared to BoB doesn't mean its a bad series.

It jumps around a lot, so it doesn't have the same cohesiveness that BoB had.

Plus you get to see the hot Australian chick's tits.

I just discovered that Dick Winters has a statue at Utah Beach in Normandy.

quote:

The Richard D. Winters Leadership monument is dedicated to the memory of all junior U.S. military officers who served on D-Day.

The monument is a 12ft-tall statue of Winters who inspired the book and award winning television series Band of Brothers. The monument is located on the D913 between Sainte-Marie-du-Mont and Utah beach.

Webster's book is probably the most accurate source, which is why Ambrose plagiarized the shite out of it.

There was a really good podcast that came out a couple years ago for the 20th anniversary. I recommend searching it out if you haven't already heard it.
