I was not aware of the lore or the YouTube shorts.
It left a little bit open to interpretation, but the director has said there are plans for sequels because the mythology goes much deeper than one movie.
With the money it is raking in, sequels seem inevitable.

Well my husband hated it. 0/10 no discernible plot. A company making MRI machines opened a portal then a pirate chased you around for awhile and none of it made sense. Worst thing he’s ever seen.

no discernible plot.
The biggest issue I had is that there were moments where a plot was clearly being formed, or at least a character’s motivations were being formed, but they were fleeting and disconnected.
Another example, the scene where a female was at a party and she had to step away to take a gummy or a pill or something.
What was the point of that scene?
While I was watching it, I wasn’t even sure who that woman was? Was it Clark’s wife? Was it the psychiatrist? I had zero idea.
The movie likely had multiple rewrites and edits because it was a disjointed mess.

Saturday night our good friend took her 17 year old daughter and mine to see it and they all got home and said its one of the worst movies they've ever seen. My kid loves everything but absolutely hated it. Said she wanted her money back.
RT has it at 92% but I've never seen 3 people with such strong negative reactions to a movie before. Now i kind of want to see what its all about.

It just seemed disjointed and full of wasteful scenes.
In what way does that scene even play a factor in the movie overall?
If you removed it, would you understand the psychiatrist’s motivations less? Does she even have a motivation for her actions outside of “me psychiatrist, checkup on patient”.
IMO, no. It was a lot of filler without substance.

Go check it out. I didn’t hate it that much, I just found it to be a mess and mediocre.
It could have been much better.

Got two reports on this movie last night. My daughter said it was really good.
My son said it was just ok, maybe a 4 or 5 and said to wait and watch it on streaming.

I didn’t love it, but I’m glad I watched it in theaters. Definitely worth checking out on discount day tomorrow (Wednesday for AMC).

Sounds like there’s more to come.
I’m not all that up on the lore & whatnot but has Chiwetel E. been in a bad movie? Not many that I can tell.
I’m hearing really good things about it. For those who are interested in this sort of stuff.

I went yesterday and really enjoyed it. I've only seen the first YouTube video, so the concept was still pretty fresh to me.
I will say the downside is the "A24ification" of the story. You have this mystery box of an idea and can go anywhere with it but the more the characters got fleshed out, the less interested I became. Apparently, every modern horror movie has to deal with someone's trauma.

People are being asked if they want to see more of the same characters or a new group of people to experience backrooms. I think the easy path is to make another movie with new characters and if that succeeds maybe come back and revisit some of the older ones.

I liked it but agree with you
The story really worked for me when it fit as a journey through the fractured mind of the central character. It works well when the victims of Chiwetel Ejiofor (Cllark) include his psychiatrist Renate Reinsve (Mary) and the young couple (Finn Bennett/Bob and Lukita Maxwell/Kat) lured into his store's basement.
The movie fell apart for me when they made it a physical place that the family man Mark Duplass (Phil) could record and was investigating.
It would have really worked for me without the second part. I was almost totally bought in when Mary went to the furniture store to investigate and the pirate mannequin was Finn's face instead of the original store mannequin.
I liked a lot of the movie. It just demonstrates how difficult it is to construct a really great movie.

quote:Agree. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. Ending was a complete disaster and nonsensical. Terrible terrible movie.
I was disappointed.
The scares weren’t really there.
The period where Kat and Bobby were with him in the backrooms was the only period that was well done.
It was slow and boring overall.
It felt like it didn’t really lean into the backrooms enough.
It tried to make the “psych” component too big of a plot point without addressing it at all at the same time.
For example, the psychiatrist’s mother. What was the point of even bringing that in? It served no purpose except to have her use the concrete as a weapon.
Was expecting much more.
Would give it a 5/10, wouldn’t watch a second time.

If they tied the ending together in way at all it would have been much better. Just left way too much to interpretation, and honestly I can't really interpret it at all.
Like said in other replies too many wasted scenes that you assume would tie everything together, but dont. Or not for me at least.
Enjoyable, but could have been much, much better.

I didn't think it was bad, but it wasn't great either. I have reoccurring dreams about walking through empty buildings with rooms and hallways that go on forever. It was cool to see that on screen.
I thought the film was more about mental illness and how Clark and Mary dealt with it. Clark, negatively, and Mary, positively. I saw the killer pirate as the backroom's image of Clark's unresolved trauma. In the end it kills him because he can't accept responsibility for all the bad shite in his life. I can relate to that.
Clark's character wasn't well developed and I couldn't figure out how he went from finding the backrooms to mapping it out. What bothers me most is the chunk of the film that seems to be missing from Clark going from still OK, to all of a sudden being a psycho. That part was hard for me to accept and kind of put me off to the film.

Just saw Backrooms. Wasn't bad. Like if Silent Hill and the Babadook had a baby
Wish they explained why Clark went crazy.
