People don’t understand that this movie is going to make money regardless. Tickets are 20 bucks and there is literally nothing in the theater

We enjoyed it. Some things I hated but for a big budget action film it was very good. You could cut out 30 minutes by eliminating the spider idiot though. Absolutely beautiful as well.
Also was hoping for a new villain, and more info on the original mineral they were after.
Solid 7.5/10 for action films which usually aren't my thing but the fam wanted to see it.

I saw it today as well, and I really enjoyed it. The middle did drag a bit but the last 1/3 was fantastic. Visually it was gorgeous, and the 3D was awesome. I might go see it again.

Avatar 2 will inevitably be the top grossing film of the year(beating Top Gun), and may even topple No Way Home depending on how the post New Years returns look. Either way the floor is 2nd or top grossing post pandemic film.
Not bad for a sequel many proclaimed “no one wants, no one asked for, and will put the nail in the coffin of James Cameron as a washed up has-been hack.” Especially considering China(probably about 600mil-1b left on the table) chose now to do the whole Covid thing, and Russia(200 million for Avatar 1) decided to invade a country and the film isn’t being released there

Yea we went to a 2:15 showing and it was packed. Someone clapped during a certain scene and it reminded me why our country is the way it is right now.

With the stadium reclining seating these days, packed theaters aren't nearly as cramped and bad as they used to be.

They're not cramped at all at the Movie Tavern and AMC. Every seat could be full on my row, and I wouldn't know until the lights come on.

It’s still comping Rogue One domestically which I doubt Disney was hoping for in the states. Overseas besides china underperforming is right where everyone thought it would be. Like others have said the word of mouth and repeat viewers don’t seem to be materializing like the original.

The Spider kid will most likely become a villain in due time. Might seem pointless now but they definitely were planting seeds for him to switch sides

I enjoyed it. The visuals were fantastic. I didn’t get the same level of magic immersion as the first, but this movie still looks absolutely incredible. It really hammers home just how bad the MCU has been looking lately.
Movie feels long, but not as long as its actual runtime.
Action setpieces in this movie are beyond stellar.
Dialogue is a little silly and plot feels dated (are there still many folks who are pro whaling?), but I still found it very grounded and relatable. Great family dynamics save this film.
Overall, I give it a solid 7/10. I was entertained and felt like I got my money’s worth.

It seems obvious at this point.
I just dont know how they feasibly keep going with the same general boogyman in part 3. The guy just lost 80 million in whale jizz plus who knows how much in equipment and lost production time. He just so happened to be the only known survivor in the engagement. Does he go rogue somehow?
A few other things that bothered me after sleeping on it: Where was the water tribe in act 3? They helped with the initial assault then disappeared until the fight was over?
Could monkey boy and Sigourney's daughter end up being bro and sister somehow? They have an odd relationship.

I think it’s clear that sig’s daughter wants to bang Spider, but we don’t know who Sig’s baby-daddy is (though it’s hinted at to be Mr. “listen up, Turd Nuggets!” Which could be an intentional red-herring). We also know who spider’s dad is, but not who the Colonel’s babbymomma is.
While I think they’re going for a romance/star-crossed lovers angle between the two of them, they could go full star wars. We all know that James Cameron isn’t shy about ripping off established franchises.

China/Russia being out made passing the first film an impossible task, but the holds are incredibly good right now.
Much lower drops than Rogue 1 and internationally countries like Italy, France, and India had about a 1% weekend to weekend drop. Which is the same as the first film.
So that statement is not fully accurate
Money is money, the first film was a 30/70 split domestic/internationally and this keeps the trend. I also think Disney is more than happy with having a billion dollar international franchise that also will get to play in China and keep their claws in that market(for better or worse, mostly worse). Especially considering Disney parks don’t just exist in Orlando and California(and apparently avatar ride in DW is experiencing 4-5 hour waits)
Film will pass Top Gun by next weekend and then we’ll see if it can buck the trend of films (besides Avatar 1 and Titanic) dropping off a cliff after New Years. If it’s holds are solid passing No Way Home is possible

If these movies were about aliens coming down to mine on earth and colonize it and humans were the ones defending y’all would eat this shite up. You don’t hate the plot at all you just hate that humans are the bad guys

Ironically, there is quite a lot of conversation here and in Europe especially about the film leaning very heavily on the white savior tropes.
Seeing as the hero of both films is, yes, a marine, that in both situations is the one to save the natives, and in the sequel the most in-touch with the planet character is a perfect clone of a U.S. marine scientist and not the actual natives. So not sure that strict caricaturing works either.

Granted, the water tribe was only in danger because of the Marine.

Saw it with my daughter last night in 3d Imax. It was visually awesome, but 30-45 too long. The theatre was about 1/2 full. I saw a few people leave at the 2.5 hour mark. It was just too long to sit in a seat when they had 30 minutes of previews followed by a 3 hour movie.
Like others have said, the plot really didn't make sense and the dialogue was bad at times, as were the way too numerous hisses. At one point, I sort of found myself laughing at serious moments, as I did in Titanic as the ship was going down, and Rose tells Jack, "This is where we first met."
Overall, not a terrible film. If not for the 3D, it would have been unwatchable IMO.
