I actually enjoy the MTV Classic channel now when it's the 80s and early 90s videos playing. I'll usually just put it on when I want background music while doing something else, but often find myself stopping to watch a video that's caught my attention.
The problem with MTVClassic is that all the videos are in blocks. All 80's, all 90's, all Metal, all hip-hop.
That's not organic MTV

We had MTV from pretty much the beginning. I don't think we even watched another channel for a few years. My favorite thing from the very early years was when they showed live concerts on Saturday night.

Absolutely agree

I lived the first 5 years of my life in Dubai, so my older sister and I had very little access to American pop culture.
When we moved back to the states, we were amazed by cable TV. So many channels, in English!
Then we discovered MTV. My mom walked in on us watching Madonna, or Prince, or some other artist that boomer parents thought were the devil, and she completely freaked out. She didn't want us watching MTV.
Which, of course, only made us want to watch MTV more. She eventually relented, and MTV became a part of our daily lives.
When Thriller came out, my friend's mom would watch MTV all day, and call us inside when Thriller came on. This is when MTV would show the long version of the video a few times a day. It was an event for us.

Music videos meant more to you because you had to wait for them or work to record and replay them.

When I had Cox cable, there was a channel called Palladia which played nothing but concerts. I really liked that channel but cut the cord and have not found a replacement.

Right and the article acknowledges those exist

MTV as a music destination still exists: There are three MTV music video channels on Pluto TV. And the little-watched MTV Classic, available on cable and satellite providers including DirecTV, offers up a steady diet of old music videos. But there’s no personality or life to those channels, which are also run on autopilot.

We've put that on at the house as well. Mostly 80s though. But it's nice to just listen to/watch videos from back then.

MTV Classic shows all videos. They even show 120 Minutes

There's no reason why Unplugged and the gameshows wouldn't work anymore. Or Singled Out, or the Spring Break whore-out specials. Guess Viacom or whoever just decided to not spend any more money on it.

This
It became a joke with TRL, but the late 80s early 90s nightly countdown show Dial MTV was peak MTV imo.
I distinctly remember staying up late all summer 1991 to see which of Summertime, You Could Be Mine, Motownphilly, Enter Sandman, Unbelievable, Losing My Religion, Rush Rush, and Everything I Do would finish number one that night.
Great summer of videos and the last summer where videos were the network’s primary focus imo as Real World premiered in 92 along with The Grind and even Choose or Lose during the presidential campaign.
ETA: Shout of to 3rd Bass and Pop Goes the Weasel where they beat the shite out of Vanilla Ice at the end

Ehhh, I think the 90s with TRL, the live spring break shows, a couple dating shows and early real world seasons were the perfect balance of music and pop culture.

Oh I enjoyed MTV until probably the mid/late 90s with everything you mentioned, but is wasn’t really MusicTelevision anymore at that point, and I think once they broke from the music video format it was just a matter of time until it fell apart.
Other than that brief Two a Days run in 06, of course

Loving being able to watch Beavis and Butthead, the real world, TRL, and catching music videos in the morning while I got ready for school
I have very fond memories watching Name by Goo Goo Dolls and Gangsta's Paradise by coolio on MTV almost every morning/night

I honestly wish that they would just run the first 5 years or so that they were on the air on a loop.
They had more than 5 good years. The station definitely changed, but i watched the channel starting from around '92, and they came out with some pretty good stuff. Liquid Television readily comes to mind.

Five years is about how long the original VJs were there. For people that grew up with the channel, those years are the best/most nostalgic.

Pauly Shore is the only redeeming thing that came from MTV.

Ridiculous is legit always on. I've checked the guide and they will have 8 hour blocks of it at times.

Who else had a VHS tape loaded and ready to record when a video that you like came on MTV? And the recording would be missing the first two or three seconds of the video because of the time it took for the VCR to kick in?
The same went for cassettes and the radio.
I remember when Beavis and Butthead first came on and all the pearl-clutching it caused amongst the parents out there. I watch it now sometimes on Pluto TV and that show is very tame compared to 80% of the crap they show on prime time these days.
That’s not saying much.

The true joy of MTV (and old SportsCenter on ESPN while we're at it) was the joy of discovery. Yes, you can see any video or sports highlight you want now on YouTube, but it requires you to go and actively pursue it. You only see the things you already like.
MTV was the nation's radio station and had, after some initial stumbles, a pretty diverse playlist. You got exposed to things outside your comfort zone (same with ESPN -- you saw the highlights of EVERY game, so you got a better feel of the entire leagues).
We have more access and content than ever before. What we lack is curation. MTV wasn't perfect at it, but I give them points for trying.

I think many have all but abandoned spending much on their cable channels these days. Most seem content airing a shite ton of one or two shows a day
