I don't even know who's stepping into Arnold's roles,

OJ Simpson was originally supposed to be The Terminator so that had the potential for a whole lot of future awkwardness, especially if he would have ended up with some of those other roles.

Arnold and it isn’t close. No one is doing what he did in the roles he had.

Stallone! I could do without Arnold. Stallone has been excellent in some of his movies.

It had nothing to do with movies he liked by Stallone, he totally forgot about Rocky.

Honestly Stallone has had a better career

Not at all. Stallone has a lot of entertaining movies but most of them are borderline B level shlock. Stallone is certainly the better dramatic actor but as far as big blockbuster action movies no one can touch peak Arnold.

Tell me you’d be okay with Stallone taking those roles.

I could see Stallone in all those. The comedies are hurt because you lose Arnold's physical size but I could see it.

Stallone, easy. Without Stallone, we don't have the greatest action movie of all time.

Rocky (the original film, not the character in general) muddies the argument because it’s a frickin academy award winning movie and everything else both these guys did were action and sci-fi flicks.

Without rocky, it’s Arnold in a landslide.

Even with rocky considered, Arnold is the bigger “star”.

Stallone was a much better actor/movies and brought ya better moments.

Arnold rose from a bodybuilder, which is the equivalent or prob less in popularity to a wrestler (the Rock) and became the governor of a state.

My vote is Stallone, but it really is remarkable the ranks Arnold came up through and what he became.

Rocky probably represents the greatest American male ever though. Great movies. From a film standpoint, Arnold was a punchline...no pun intended.

Rocko’s speech on the street to his son during Balboa as well as ‘stuff in the basemebt’ to Pauly still brings tears to my eyes. Arnold has never made me cry.

but he definitely isn't pulling off a Philly boxer sounding like he just got off the boat from Europe.

Probably not but let's not forget that Stallone was barely believable once he got in the ring.Horrible athlete and WAY too short to pull off as a HW boxer.

Carl Weathers covered for a TON of Stallone's short comings in the boxing scenes.

Yeah I agree with that.

But you can't just take out one of the most iconic characters in movie history and say, now let's debate. I mean Philly built a statue to a fictional character.

I mean if we're asking who had the more iconic characters it's Stallone. Rocky/Rambo

Who's the biggest action movie star it's Arnold.

I meant Rocky, the original movie, and not the character in general. Yes, I would agree that in terms of iconic characters, rocky + Rambo > terminator.

What I meant was that both these guys have similar catalogues outside of the original rocky film, as it’s a major outlier (as an Oscar winning best picture) to the rest of their work.

The title of the thread is Arnold vs. Stallone. Reading that, I automatically think “which is the bigger icon/star?” Or “which is the greater action hero”? I don’t think “which is the best dramatic actor”?

I just think Arnold, despite not having an Oscar like Stallone, is the bigger Hollywood icon. I also think Arnold’s portfolio of terminator, t2, true lies and predator (which are all legit great movies amongst all the b level stuff they’ve both done) makes him the GOAT action hero.

I'll give the edge to Stallone if only for creating the "Rocky" series. The Rocky Balboa character is forever ingrained in the collective American consciousness. He is the underdog who fights his way out of poverty to become multiple-time heavyweight champion of the world. If "Eye of the Tiger" or "No Easy Way Out" don't get your blood pumping, you just can't be reached. My oldest child is only 7-years-old and I've already quoted lines from "Rocky" films to her in tough times to help her pull through. There's a statue of the guy, for Christ's sake...

The main thing to keep in mind is how the question is worded. It's not who was necessarily better but how the film industry would have been affected without that person.

Without Arnold, I am going to assume there is still a Terminator franchise. Would it have been as good with someone else in Arnold's role? Maybe or maybe not. But it's not like it's a super challenging role that needed a special actor. He played an unemotional cyborg.

I think the fact that Stallone created the Rocky franchise and at least had a hand in writing the Rambo films gives him an edge.

You're kidding, right?

Stallone is a decent actor who got bowed-up and stereotyped. Arnold was a body builder who landed roles on his physique.

Arnold's blockbusters >>> Stallone's biggest movies

BUT

Arnold's B-sides are WAY less enjoyable than Stallone's -- Over the Top, Cobra, Cliffhanger, Demo Man, Assassins, Daylight, Cop Land
