I know a lot of people shun this movie because of how it’s viewed as white guilt propaganda, but I think it’s a really a misunderstood film.

It’s not some Spike Lee-style movie with the typical black power tropes infused into it. It’s a historical and cultural immersion into what the antebellum-era Deep South was like. All of the characters were real people and it was filmed in New Orleans and in areas around Alexandria. It felt more like a documentary than a propaganda film. I loved it when I first saw it.

It just boggles my mind how people on here rejected it when it hits really close to home for those of us who have roots in Texas and Louisiana.

This movie is great and the source material is must-read - and should be for all American middle schoolers.

In terms of "woke", I mean, it features a black female plantation owner as one of the characters.

This movie backed up one thing I hate about the academy awards.

We have movies like this where people have to play sometimes, real life terrible people. yet they do it so well but don't receive recognition for it.

In this instance, Michael Fassbender absolutely should've been nominated for playing Epps. He was so damn good in the role, playing an absolutely shitty human being. Sarah Paulson was also good as Mrs. Epps.

Same could be said for Leo in Django, and Ralph Fiennes in Schlender's list. But at least he was nominated.

Mistress Shaw was an actual person. I don’t really see how that’s “woke”

Tell me how it’s anything more than an original, historical story adapted from a book

The book is fake too. It was written by two New York lawyers who also falsified Texas Ranger stories for publish.

Is it really accurate?

Some of these plantations around New Orleans were owned and ran by Europeans. They wouldn't have a present-day southern accent.

No, we don't need to give kids more reasons to falsely hate America as if we were one of the only countries that had slavery. Every country had slavery and some still do.

Was Solomon Northup actually born a free man?
Was he a participant in his own kidnapping?
Did he really witness the savage violence depicted in the book?
Were the other characters real people?
Did he return to New York and weave his experiences into a book?
Who was David Wilson?

Several years of fact-checking every line of Twelve Years, as well as David Wilson's other books, have led historical researcher Michelle Haas to some dramatic new answers to questions like these. Here is the entire text, with annotations throughout and back stories on all of the characters--even the villains other historians have ignored. This is the story of Twelve Years a Slave, and of David Wilson, the man who really wrote it into history.

It's NOT. That's my whole point. It's telling the truth, not some fictional black girl boss narrative.

Have you ever read the book? It's short and it's a breathtaking adventure story.

Why does one have to be "liberal" to want a classic work of American literature to be included in the educational canon? It's better than half the nonsense they are presently promoting.

Have you ever read the book? I would much rather kids read 12 Years a Slave than To Kill a Mockingbird.

Union soldiers who had read Northup’s memoir, found Edwin Epps’ plantation while traveling through Louisiana. They confirmed that Northup and Patsey were owned by him via parchment records and other slaves on the plantation who knew Northup while he was still a slave there.

Ignore historical reality and fact cause it might hurt feelings.
