Boomers see a movie like this and want to cut a check to blm and buy their mulatto grandson a new pair of jordans (his great grandfather was Italian)

Anyone under 40 that’s intelligent sees stuff like this and rolls their eyes and groans. What will happen to Hollywood when there are no more boomers to consume their slop? I guess we are already seeing this with how movie theaters are dying

So an entire country was just pure evil for a random 10 year window one time? Was there something in the water or something? Like a zombie virus?

That worldview may feel good to hold, but it wont allow you to actually understand the world around you, given thats your goal.

Go back to reddit and comicbooks.

If you join the club and wave the flag, you're as guilty as the rest.

We watched The Color Purple in middle school. Parents signed a waiver though.

My ancestors owned slaves in the South and I'm a card carrying Republican.

I loved this movie and didn't feel it was woke or white guilt driven. I've heard it's very close to the source material (reinforced in this thread), but I haven't read the book.

Exactly dude that’s what I was thinking

It’s a film that has beautiful cinematography, a moving soundtrack, and immerses itself deep into Southern culture.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: you ain’t a true Southern baw if you’ve never seen 12 years a slave
I think it's worth pointing out that the director is not American. And his other major works have turned a very sharp eye on ugly realities of his home culture as well - not unfairly, I would argue.

The book will take your breath away.

I've always thought it was odd, too, that there has been no major action biopic made of Frederick Douglass.

It’s probably around 90% true to the book

One thing they changed was that in reality, it was Northup’s attorney that rescued him, not Mr. Parker. Northup also got smallpox on the way to New Orleans which they decided not to show.

There are Nazis buried in Arlington. Nazis helped create NASA and the space program. Some guys just put their head down, worked and provided for their families.

We watched fiction too but presented as fiction. We watched historical stuff but our teacher always pointed out inaccuracies then after it was done he’d provide a list of things we could watch on our own that included things like 12YAS.

I’ll catch it every couple years when it’s on one the movie channels.

It’s a fantastic movie. As far as white guilt goes, I feel sorry for Samuel Northup, but it’s not my job to clean up Edwin Epps’ mess 7 or 8 generations later.
