re: You're an NFL HC, your team is 16-0 going into the final week

You want to treat it like a preseason game. Let the starters play a quart or 2 and then sit them. You don't want them to go 3 weeks without any real game action.

This here. Anyone that isn't dealing with a nagging injury plays to start the game. Maybe start rotating second stringers in with the starters in the second quarter, and have the starters play one series at the start of the second half. After that, let everyone else play.

Worked out for the Patriots right?

I get the injury argument, but I think it's better mentally for your players to reinforce the competitive hunger. Throwing a game for meta strategy reasons would really rub me the wrong way, as it would anyone who is actually a fierce competitor.

You play and don’t be a bitch.

Depends. Is the team on fire and clicking on all cylinders, or scrapping by to get wins and also having some key players banged up in the process?
If the team is really healthy in general, don’t rest. If you have key players hurt, get healthy for the playoff run.
You have to remember how rusty a team can become if your best players sit 2 weeks in a row.

You play the damn game and act like professionals.
Also, many super bowl winners are forgotten but everyone knows the unbeaten Dolphins team.

Records get broken all the time. Going undefeated is certainly something to hang your hat on, but if you don’t win a SB that season it really doesn’t matter.

We have a real world example of this from 2007. Weird how the thread was started as a hypothetical without mentioning it.
The Colts were in this situation in 2009 too, but that was the second to last game where they quit on history. The Saints would have taken care of them anyways.

This is a great point. The number of Super Bowl winners is an infinitely growing list. Does anyone really remember who won the Super Bowl 20 years ago? Outside of the players on that team and fans of that particularity team at that particular time, it really loses its value quickly.
Going undefeated is something that may happen once every 100 years and will be remembered a lot longer.
Throwing that opportunity away to PERHAPS avoid an injury is pussy as it gets.

Ask the 2007 Patriots which one they'd rather have, 16-0 or the ring

I'd be inclined to go for
If you are 15-1, rest the players
If you are 16-0 and have a shot at history, take it.

Did going for 16-0 cost them the ring?

You 100% go for it.
Life rarely if ever gives opportunities like that, to truly cement your place as the best of all time. Should never pass it up.

There have been 60 Super Bowl Winners or so. There has only been 1 team finish as undefeated. You go for the undefeated season. This isn't even a debate.

Not enough information in OP to decide
1. How healthy is your team?
2. Is the opposing team playing for anything other than pride? Are they good? Are they a division rival? Are they healthy?
3. Is this game home or away? Whats the weather like? How old is the Field Turf or how well maintained is the grass pitch?
4. Do any of your star players have incentives that they need to play to hit?
Plenty more questions but these are what come to mind now?
