You hang banners for how far you get for a reason.

It’s basically how long you can hang on.

And to think that florida crew in the 2000's did it back to back with the same team. With ease i might add.

Duke may have gone in as the favorite, but they have been flirting with defeat more than any of the other three teams in the Final Four besides UConn. Michigan, Arizona, and to a slightly lesser extent, Illinois, have generally been dominant. Yes, some opponents have hung around for a half, maybe a little longer, but those three have been able to turn it on late.

IMO, Arizona v. Michigan is the NC game

what?

It's one of the fairest formats....especially since they went to the super regional format and made the CWS Championship best of 3.

I think that component is what makes it harder. In most instances if you’re doing multi game series the “best team” should win. In basketball that’s not really the case. A lot harder/more fluky to navigate.

Luck and a top 6 offensive efficiency. In the last 5 years at least, no offense outside that level has won the National Championship.

UConn’s offense is 28 in efficiency and therefore probably not good enough to win it all. The other 3 teams are all top 5.

Definitely is. It's funny, when your school is out or not particularly competitive, it goes by pretty quick and many teams look like they're cruising.

When you're a fan and your team is competitive, it seems like you've got to thread the eye of a needle, it's such an impossible-seeming slog.

It’s just kind of flukey and doesn’t usually match the team that would win more games over bigger sample sizes to me.

Doesn’t mean it’s not awesome, fun, and unique. It perfectly matches a sport with that many division 1 participants.

It's definitely the post-season that has the most randomness and variability in final outcome.

You have to win 6 single elimination games in a very high variance sport.

The way I look at it is, if they repeated the post season would the winner change? I think if you ran the same NCAA tournament 10 times you may get 10 different winners.

I’ve always said this format is one of the worst ways to crown a champion but darnit, it’s far and away the most entertaining and enjoyable.
You have to win 6 straight do or die games and in theory your opponent gets tougher each subsequent round.
Feels like college basketball is the sport you remember the great teams who didn’t win it all, the most.

Depends on whose perspective you’re looking at it from.

The best team doesn’t always win, which means you can win without having to be the best team. Does that make it tougher, or easier?

I was going to make this point.

Is winning the NCAA tournament harder for blue bloods and the “best team” in a given year than, say, football? I would say yes.

Is winning the NCAA tournament easier for midmajors and underdogs than football? I would say yes to that too.

That Illinois team was stacked with talent, and was a 1-point buzzer beater loss in the regular season finale and a 5-point loss in the NCAA championship game away from a perfect season.

Could have gone down as one of the best teams of all time, but feels largely forgotten these days. Reminds me a bit of 2011 LSU football.

I think the change in format significantly alters who can win the CWS now. I'm not going to badmouth last year's team, but it was custom made to win the postseason, and not necessarily be the best team.

2 really good starters, which you try to develop in the SEC weekend series, can carry you far. That's why I won't count LSU out this year, not yet. They have Evans and Schmidt, who if they settle in, could win it for us.

Regional: those 2 starters get you to 2-0, at which point you have your 3rd starter, midweek guy, and most of the bullpen to get you 1 more win.

Super regional: your 2 starters can get you straight to Omaha.

Omaha week one is like the regional, and the best-of-3 finals is like the Super... with the difference being that the ballpark in Omaha is more friendly to pitchers. So your guys in the pen who struggled in the SEC can now pitch to contact, and the stadium will hold the balls in.

I agree, you have to be 75% good enough and 25% lucky to win it all.

This is true. There's a reason absolutely macho guys like Ovechkin, Brind'Amour, and Ken Daneyko weep like girls when they win. It's the hardest in sports to capture.
