So to go to the academy you have to basically be full in 0% chance of pro ball.

I don’t know about now, but Roger Staubach did a 4 year tour of duty including a year in Vietnam after graduating the naval academy and did pretty good with the Dallas Cowboys.

I guess he’s the exception to the rule.

you think they’ve been affected by the number of option HS teams shrinking?

I’m surprised that with the caliber of athletes available to them, Army and Navy don’t get lit up for 60 points every week… at that point it doesn’t matter what you run

I think they changed the rule when I think it was an Army LB? Someone correct me on who it was, but he was in line to be a late draft pick and many were wondering if he even could because of his service requirements but then the Army passed a rule where he could. Think it was around when I was late HS/early college so late 00s.

In my opinion it’s had more to do with the end of the Global War on Terror. I’ve always believed that it’s not a coincidence that navy’s streak spanned during the height of the war.

He was drafted by the Cowboys in 1964 and didn't join the team until 1969. He was 27 years old. Could've been the GOAT. In sports, you just can't take years away from the game and be the same.

It's rare that an academy will give a deferment to required military service so the member can play professional sports. The Naval Academy let David Robinson out of his requirement but that was because he grew too tall to serve at sea.

How does the transfer portal work for them (both in and out)?

It doesn't. You can't transfer in. You have to have a recommendation from a Senator to attend the service academies.

NIL doesn't apply. Transfer portal doesn't apply.

Policy change was in 2018.

Robinson exceedingly surpassed 6-foot-6 -- the maximum height of an unrestricted line officer -- he was unable to serve at sea. As a compromise, Secretary of the Navy John Lehman granted Robinson a waiver to receive commission as a civil engineering officer in the Naval Reserve for only two-years instead of five. He served at the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay in southeastern Georgia.

He was still completing his service...they just reduced his time.

2019 they finished ranked. 2020 with dumb covid rules couldn’t have contact practices and got blasted by BYU in first game. All downhill since then. Shame

I just looked it up, and it was Caleb Campbell in 2008. Maybe the overall policy changed in 2018 but maybe they gave him a waiver or something? Thought it was a policy change altogether but I guess not if it wasn't until 2018 like you're telling me. But I do remember it being all over ESPN at the time like "WILL ARMY LET THEIR PLAYER GO TO THE NFL?" like it was rubbed in our face how much the media wanted this guy to get drafted

Air Force and Army have had his number for the past several years. Those are must win games for service academies.

a lot of non qb's can learn to run the option, it's not like the academies are taking partial qualifiers. bTW option team vs rpo teams in dome last weekend.. option boys undefeated.
