and if you refuse you don't get to be an engineer anywhere
There are other leagues around the world (and even in this country) they can choose to join. Basketball especially.
They can also opt to sit out the draft and choose their own team a year later (I believe).
The market does not demand a high amount of these professions. Ergo, alternate products outside of the major leagues (NFL, MLB, NBA) will not thrive like their big brothers.
Not to mention, I think anyone is pretty much okay with relocating if it means a minimum of an upper 6 figure salary with the potential of millions. Especially considering they weren't making anything to begin with.
ETA: Comparing this to white collar jobs like engineering, accounting, etc... is apples and oranges. The market demands are vastly different.

1) We don't force them into these sports. It's an individual choice to choose a career path with limited high end opportunities.
2) The players have these things called "unions".
ETA: Obvious MLB ruleZ and NBA/NFL droolZ thread is obvious.

Why do people here tolerate political posts in forums where they do not belong?

It's all about the money.

Nothing is stopping other leagues from starting up? The NFL, MLB, and NBA just have superior products than the other leagues so they go the fans. That is capitalism 101 and America 101.
Do us all a favor and just move to France already

I don't think this is about MLB vs NBA/NFL.

Strictly speaking, being a lawyer is a limited market too, yet nobody told me I had to ply my trade in Green Bay or nowhere at all regardless of how i felt about it.
Nobody tells football players that either. They can go play Arenaball or join an independent league if they don't like the Packers.
Those leagues just won't pay as well, but that's a choice the player makes. I could easily make over $100K in Silicon Valley but I don't want to move there.

Why should the Dallas Cowboys have artificial limits placed on them so the Jacksonville Jaguars can compete better.
The league does it because it is ONE league and that ONE league recognizes that a league with only 4-5 teams that have a snowball's chance in hell of winning would not generate as much revenue as the one they have.
Remember, the teams are NOT independent businesses. They are FRANCHISES.

It's ironic. America is one of the most right-wing countries on the face of the earth yet their sports leagues are the most socialist of all. Three of their four major sports league have a salary cap and the one that doesn't (MLB) have extensive revenue sharing. Meanwhile, socialist paradise Europe's top soccer leagues are much more cutthroat and capitalistic. I'm not going to debate which economic system is better but the U.S. certainly has the superior sports structure. It allows everyone to have a legitimate shot at eventually building a team good enough to win the championship. You definitely can't say the same for the Premier League or La Liga.

quote:Exactly. In fact, there are rumours that LeBron, Durant, Paul, Curry, etc (the major stars) may threaten to "create" another league, as a bargaining tactic. It is very unlikely that it would happen, but hey, but these players know they have a lot of power and popularity in the market, so they would be using their advantage. Doesn't sound socialistic to me.

It's interesting/sad to listen to y'all defend the monopolistic corporatism that dominates American sports.
And no it's not the best system, it's the worst. Both for the workers and the fans.

I don't think that's true considering you're the one turning to personal attacks, not me.
