I love New Orleans, but the city isn’t hosting the Olympics, an NHL or MLB team, or the WC.

The Superdome configuration after the Super Bowl renovations weren't going to allow the field to fit. Plus, natural grass was also an issue and Nola didn't want to pay that bill.

Some of you nola folks

Have zero sense of scale

And how u fit into the larger national picture.

I get it. U basically live on Pluto. As New Orleans is its own planet.

But let the rest of us help u out, perspective-wise

The same reason(s) Jackson, MS couldn’t be a host site

Could the field be expanded enough to be soccer field size? Not sure the width is there

Too expensive to put grass field, and remove stands to make room.
Would be nice, but not worth it. Will just have to suffice with Super Bowls, Final Fours, and CFP.
If we build a new stadium, hopefully they take in account FIFA requirements, but would hate to lose The Dome. Definitely understand, but hated losing the ramps, because as a kid, I loved rollidown them as a kid. And once the Bears move, will be 2nd oldest NFL stadium.

I don’t think New Orleans even placed a bid.

Technically did

Just build a retractable roof like everyone else is doing - solves all those problems.

I believe FIFA required a window of like 2 months that the host stadium couldn't have an event. Or something like that.
Was the Superdome clear of that window at this time of year? I imagine it probably was, though anyway

No need. Plus all the money just put in for renovations.
Plus when the Bears, and Chiefs leave, we will be 2nd most Iconic NFL stadium

It’s an extremely small media market, comparatively. It’s a crime-ridden city, comparatively. And the Superdome is great, but old and probably a bit limited structurally.

There are World Cup games in NYC, Mexico City, LA, Houston, Arlington (DFW), Toronto, Miami, Atlanta, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Philly, Boston, SF. That’s 13 of the 17 largest metro areas in North America.

Seattle isn’t far behind, and Vancouver and KC are also soccer hotbeds within NA.

So…New Orleans is 14 slots below KC in terms of metro size, has no MLS franchise, and is going to be considered why? Because it has a dated, albeit renovated stadium, that can’t utilize a grass field and may not even fit a soccer field.

I’d think maybe a dozen or so US cities would be higher on the list than New Orleans.

I also wonder how well the grass does in domes that aren't retractable.
They’re not opening the roofs for the grass. They have a bunch of these special lights all over the field to keep the grass alive.

Was there a requirement that the venue seat so many tens of thousands fans, and that caused some 'obvious' venues to be omitted? Or am I thinking NFL superbowl requirements? Or both?

Also FIFA wanted a site with an established soccer culture. Every site you mentioned has an MLS team attached to it

The most we have here are two minor league USL teams the Jesters and the Ramparts.

Well yeah, a century ago New Orleans was on par with any other city not named NYC

Surprised this thread is still going. NO has the hotels, tourism/hospitality support infrastructure, and international name recognition on par/better than all but a few of the sites. None of that matters because NO does not have a top division professional soccer team and a stadium that can fit a WC regulation field, like every other host city/region.

If NO had those 2 things I think it would have been an 80-90% chance the City would have hosted, assuming (big assumption) the City and State would have raised the money to meet FIFA's requirements.

Chicago, Montreal, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Phoenix, and Detroit chose not bid on the World Cup games, because it would have been cost prohibitive.

While nearly a dozen U.S. cities put the finishing touches on preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ahead of next week's kickoff, some of the country's most sport-frenzied communities are settling in to watch from home.

Based on the economics of major sporting events, it might prove a savvy decision in retrospect. The 2026 World Cup's host cities were announced in 2022 after a competitive bidding process. But many cities that declined to be considered for participation at the marquee event made their reservations clear years earlier, often citing financial reasons and cumbersome requirements set by FIFA, the tournament's governing body.

For many of America's most sports-crazed cities missing out on this year's World Cup, the appeal of hosting mega-events just wasn't enough to justify the costs.

The renovation of the Super Dome made it impossible to have a regulation sized field according to FIFA guidelines

New Orleans is shortlisted for the 2031 Rugby World Cup, but the Superdome as the venue. Rugby pitch dimensions are just as large as FIFA requirements. Not sure if they approved any variances. Rugby World Cup takes place in the fall. It would have to be a window where the Saints play an international game and there’s a 3 week window where they can put grass in the dome.
