Walker Kessler grew up in Atlanta
Good call. Forgot about him. Kessler's journey sort of reminds me of Matt Harpring's journey. Kessler went to Woodward and Harpring went to Marist.
I was a huge Alec Kessler fan as a little kid. One time he got lost in the Bahamas and everybody thought he was dead. I was pretty distraught and busted up about it. But then he turned up alive and everything was okay.

Drive through predominantly white and black neighborhoods and see how many kids of each are gathered around a basketball goal.

Shane Gillis had a funny bit on this topic that was rooted in some truth. I think his spin is exactly the reason.

My best theory is that while basketball is still a very popular sport in the south, athletic southern whites are much more likely to also play football and baseball, which are huge in the south.
The guys going pro now also grew up in the "travel ball" age- so the ones that play baseball are doing it damn near year round now.
I've got 4 or 5 good buddies that are lunatics when it comes to travel ball. It's all they talk about, and we're 3 weeks shy of christmas and they're still having baseball practice. It's pure lunacy.

Yep, and Gillis is spot on with the bit

A lot of southern white people think of basketball as ghetto or inherently black. Those southern whites are way more inclined to play football and baseball.
Kinda similar to how there aren't very many black golfers or tennis players.

It’s all about %’s…
(And I’m assuming here Bc not looking this up)
There are more African Americans by % in the south than most other regions of the US, therefore there would be more African Americans that would excel.
Same with predominantly Caucasian places - there would be more Caucasians that would excel.
Pretty simple

The new thing in the smaller, southern states is consolidation. The inner city schools tend to be larger, more black and are strong in basketball/football. The rural, white consolidated schools are smaller and focus on football/baseball. The top athletes at either school drift towards the top sports in those schools.

White kids in the south can play baseball year round. People are forced inside for the entire winter in the midwest so white kids in rural areas really can’t do much else besides play basketball indoors.

The state of Iowa has produced many white NBA players, just off the top of my head...
Bobby Hansen
Nick Collison
Kirk Hinrich
Kyle Korver
Raef Lafrentz
Ryan Bowen
Fred Hoiberg
Matt Bullard
Jarrod Uthoff

This sounds like something a black person would say about the system

He was probably a pussy about it and didn’t take it as the locker room hazing it almost assuredly was. I’ve coached and played with a lot of black guys, they do it in a slightly different way but it’s no different than the ribbing that goes on with mostly white locker rooms.

My best guess is obvious
Really good mathematicians think they suck when they go to MIT.
Southern white basketball players don’t think they’re good enough when they grow up around black athletes. Or they just don’t get the opportunity to develop because they aren’t as good as black teammates.
Thus, they either play a different sport or they reach a level where they aren’t the star of their team.
Just a guess based on the truth that it’s better to be a large fish in a normal pond than a large fish in a pond of giant fish.
Point is that more would develop to a more elite level if they are told they are among the best.
Further, most elite white players are liabilities on defense. Growing up in a predominantly white area hides their defensive deficiency and allows their offense to develop. Elite southerners can’t stay on the court because they are exposed defensively.

I think that this post and the separation of black and white is schools is instructive.
White people are still the majority in Georgia, but the public schools are only about one-third white.
Basketball is an afterthought at just about all of rural private schools and the kids grow up way more focused on baseball and football.
Football and baseball are also king at just about all of the big majority white public high schools in metro Atlanta and those kids are way ore likely to grow up thinking about playing baseball or football.
