I had a discussion about this in the late 80's with former KRLD (Dallas) radio announcer, one time Dallas Cowboys PA announcer, and Texas Radio Hall of Famer, Roger Emrich. Roger's first media job was as the public address announcer at West Jefferson High in the 70's. He left there for the Times Pic, where he covered high school football. He went into the Air Force, came out and got a journalism degree from Loyola. Then moved to Dallas, and eventually went to work at KRLD.

The guy was an encyclopedia of high school football info for Louisiana and Texas.

He said one of the Ferriday teams that won four straight state championships, 1953, 1954, 1955 & 1956, was the best team ever in the state.

I found this 2019 Concordia Sentinel article that talks about Bobby Glenn Harmon being an All-American in 1953.

quote:

That 1953 Ferriday team outscored its opponents 405-76, with Harmon and Leo Young making All-State.

I'm assuming that's the team Roger was talking about.

Here's a great Dallas Morning News article about Roger from when he passed away in 2019.

Is anyone else here old enough to know how good those Ferriday teams were?

Evangel 98 or 99. Whichever year that had Cole Pittman, Stevie Lee, and Phillip Geiger on defense. That team was nasty.

The 98 WM team with Bradie James, Jason Ledoux, and Brian West was filthy. Every snap those guys were in the backfield pressuring the QBs.

I played against both and I can assure the 98' WM squad was hands down the better team

One of the early 90’s Haynesville teams were pretty good. I believe one year they played defending 5A state champs West Monroe and beat them easily. Another year they killed a very good Evangel team led by All American Josh Booty. Believe they knocked Booty out and he missed 4 games with a broken hand.

Carencro 96 or 97 (cant remember which) Kevin Faulk Sr year ran up and down the field like he was in Tecmo Bowl.

That was 92 when they won the state championship. Though Faulk is the primary reason they got there, by my recollection Wade Ritchey's leg played a significant role for them in the playoffs in particular.

1997 Shaw. I know they didn’t go undefeated but between talent on the roster and the competition they played they stand out as the best team I’ve ever seen. Just a few of the players QB Derrick Joseph Tulane top 100 player RB Shyrone Carey LSU top 50 player RB Brandon Carey Marshall WR Terrell Harris Tulane WR Ronald Bellamy Michigan top 100 player C Tori Taulli Tulane LB Cameron Vaughn LSU DB Greg Brooks Michigan Also Joesph was a 10.5 100m guy.

They lost to us and then everyone returned pretty much. Then swap Adam McConathy for Bradie James. I do think 97 WM gets overlooked and actually had a better secondary than 98 WM.

He was the QB. John “Whip Dawg” Bernard was the RB. They lost to us 24-21 in the Dome.

I remember John Curtis being ranked as perineal Top 10 in America, back when USA Today newspapers were still a thing.

A couple more would be '75 St Augustine and '73 Captain Shreve which at least on paper may have been the best.

75 st aug may hold the record for the most college players
