C, that Covington team only lost once in two years...to the 75 St. Aug team in the state final. Covington chose to play in Hammond to accommodate the crowd. Against that juggernaut, the Lions chose poorly. ETA - Advancing on first downs seems like some an odd thing now.

St aug would have beaten them anywhere,

The next tie breaker was penetrations

Really quite unbelievable that none of those Evangel QB's never amounted to anything on the collegiate level.

Josh Booty missed 5 years of football, before finally coming back to LSU and was 1st team all SEC in 2000. Berlin was 1st or maybe 2nd team all ACC and went an unprecedented 5-0 vs Florida and Florida St. His final year at Miami he was actually pretty damn good and would start for the Rams in the NFL. John David Booty was Heisman favorite in 2007 before breaking his hand and won a couple of Rose Bowls. Hell, he came extremely close to beating out Leinart his freshman year in 2003 when he was supposed to be a senior in high school. Unfortunately he had a knee injury preventing him from staying in the NFL very long. But, yeah, to say they amounted to nothing in college is just dumb.

I agree.

That being said, it was still a poor decision. Jack Salter said as much.

Yeah you couldn’t have advancement based on first downs anymore in today’s passing type of game… imagine a running offense getting 5 first downs to go 80 yards and a passing offense getting it in chunks with two first downs…

Defeated Istrouma in Championship Game. Both teams were undefeated entering the game.

Covington was lucky to advance past the 1st or 2nd round game when they were tied by HL Bourgeois 24-24. South Lafourche had earlier defeated HLB 24-0. If not for a questionable call in the dome against St. Augustine, the Tarpons might have won back to back state championships in 76 and 77

Jack Salter vs Leon McGraw: That was 74 years of eventual coaching tenure going at it.

I saw that Istrouma team play against East Ascension where they simply could not stop Jude Hernandez.

i forget who, but there was a team a year or two before OT that lost the first down count by 1 or 2 but had 4 times the yardage as their opponent.

ironically BM was one of the 3 teams whose game gave us ot and in 83 they and two other 9-1 highly ranked teams that missed the playoffs gave us the wild cards(to fill in the byes).

Two upper class State Champion teams that probably don't deserve a mention in this thread, but who's seasons could have been made into a Hollywood movie were '70 West Jefferson and '74 Tara.

After driving back from scouting for their second game of the season, WJ Head Coach "Hoss" Memtsas and Asst. Coach Ray Latoof were driving back to West Jefferson Stadium where they noticed someone had broken in. The two men rushed into the stadium and discovered a group of intruders trying to steal some of the team’s equipment. There was a tussle where Memtsas suffered a heart attack and collapsed on the floor and eventually died in Coach Latoof's arms.

The team would rally around the memory of Coach "Hoss" and Coach Latoof who had been elevated to Head Coach, and though they loss the last game of the regular season to East Jefferson led by Mike Miley, they would indeed go on to win the State Championship.

The '74 Tara team, one of my favorite LA HS football stories, started the year 0-3 and then had the balls to go on win the State Championship. I'd be willing to bet some filthy money that will never ever happen again.

Tara still the only team to win highest class without a winning record.

EJ did not win another playoff game from 1970 until salt got a win.

I was at that 1970 title game.

Do you know what it particularly was that absolutely turned the lights on for this team in the playoffs? Was it missing key players during the regular season or some other factors?

Was that played at WJ Stadium or at Bogalusa?
