Here are some of the candidates, most of whom are the usual suspects:
Ed Orgeron, LSU (67-47 overall record)
Jimbo Fisher, Florida State (128-48 overall record)
Gene Chizik, Auburn (38-38 overall record)
Les Miles, LSU (145-73 overall record)
Larry Coker, Miami (86-47 overall record)
Lloyd Carr, Michigan (122-40 overall record)
Gene Stallings, Alabama (97-61-2 overall record)
Someone else???
What say y'all?

Gene Chizik and Gene Stallings. It's the name.

My vote is for Gene

I think Jimbo was a good coach, but Aggy gave him a guaranteed contract and he got lazy

If you include basketball Kevin Ollie's in the running.

I wouldn’t call Les Miles a bad coach or put him in the worst coach category. His run at LSU was pretty good.

Stallings and Carr have zero business being on this list. Hell Jimbo and Les are much, much better than Coker, Chizik, or Orgeron.

Les Miles definitely doesn’t belong anywhere near that list.
If Saban doesn’t go to Bama Les probably wins at least 3 championships.
The answer is Chizik, followed closely by Coach O and Coker.

It's one of these two.
Gene Chizik, Auburn (38-38 overall record)
Larry Coker, Miami (86-47 overall record)

Hard to argue against O

By coaching record?
158–151–3 (college)
4–13 (NFL)
Howard Schnellenberger often said that "they will write books and make movies about my time [at Oklahoma]...Schnellenberger resigned after one season at Oklahoma going 5-5-1.
But he always seemed to choose struggling programs or never was programs...so...that was his thing.

Chizik was 5–19 at Iowa State, fired 2 years after winning the natty at Auburn (after going 3–9 and 0–8 in SEC), and never again hired as a HC.

I think Chizik was a worse coach overall in totality than Coker, but a toddler could’ve led that 01 Miami team (which Coker didn’t recruit or assemble as the HC, though he was on staff prior) to a championship.
Chizik (and Orgeron, for that matter) at least inherited not-amazing situations.

Even though he was at Bama, I always liked and respected Stallings. He doesn’t belong on this list.

1. Chizik
2. Orgeron
.... I love Ed, but after this, there's a lot of space.

I think I would take Chizik over Larry Coker.
