And when was this? Now most fans are used to this.

One of the first big names I remember is Leonard Fornette.

For what reason? I'm sure if you go back to the WWII era you could find some Nile Kinnick kinda player who opted out of a bowl game to go fight a war.

Wasn't it some RB from Stanford?

Looks like McCaffrey & Fournette both skipped in the same season

Craig James

But he did it because of the bad publicity of allegedly killing 5 hookers

It was McCaffrey followed closely by Fournette.

I think it is arguably Mike Williams who sat out the entire 2004 season.

McCaffery & Fournette were the first two of note - but it was this that shaped the current landscape -

quote:

Notre Dame linebacker Jaylon Smith suffered a significant knee injury in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl that cost him an estimated $20 million in first-round money. Smith was eventually drafted in the second but put on injured reserve by the Dallas Cowboys his rookie season. He later collected $700,000 cashing in on a loss of draft value insurance policy -- significantly short of that $20 million.

"It is unreal," said Ronnie Kaymore, CEO of New Jersey-based Kaymore Sports Risk Management and Consulting. "… It all stems from the Jaylon Smith scenario. The kid did collect on his insurance but he lost far more than what he was compensated for. I don't know what the schools do to rectify. At most schools, it's going to become a problem."

Don’t remember if LF7 was first but he was an early pioneer in opting out. The way Miles wasted him made it somewhat justifiable in my mind.

McCaffery in modern times.

Fournette was forced to sit by Orgeron.

Didn’t some other RB blow his knee up in a bowl game? Lattimore from South Carolina?

I think that’s why Fournette didn’t play.

Crushed that dudes $ and college RBs took note.

I thought CMc announced first that season. CMC and LF7 started it. Or at least made it acceptable

Fournette said he wanted to play but O and the staff talked him out of it. His ankle was never right that whole season.

I think CMc might have opted out just before him

CMC opted out, Fournette soon after told the staff he was playing but it was so uncommon then it was no big deal. Staff told him to sit out the bowl game but that Jaylon Smith injury is what really started this whole thing.

2003 Arkansas had a first round lineman named Shawn Andrews that did it. I was a kid and I was pissed.

Allegedly? Are you talking about a separate incident? Because he DEFINITELY killed 5 hookers while at SMU.
