came to say this. Best tackler in the history of football regardless of position. The true definition of a safety last line of defense.

This. Or Ronnie Lott. Take your pick. Ed Reed was damned good too.

Jake Scott and Dick Anderson are the most underrated safety tandem in NFL history and at least one, if not both, should be in the HoF.

My vote for best safety is Ronnie Lott.

Ronnie Lott is my vote.

Ed Reed is honorable mention.

Best combo of the two? Troy Polamalu

Lol no.

The best combo of the 2, at least in the modern NFL, is Brian Dawkins.

Sean Taylor RIP was on his way to an All Pro selection that season. Really came into his own. Never seen a safety cause so many alligator arms. shite his rookie highlights are enough to match most careers.

I'd have to go with either Ronnie Lott or Ed Reed.

I'm not sure the debate goes any farther than that for best all-time.

After them, your next tier for rounding out the Top 5-10 in no particular order likely includes:

Troy Polamalu
Deron Cherry
LeRoy Butler
Willie Wood
Larry Wilson
Jake Scott
Donnie Shell
Steve Atwater

A shame both Eric Berry and Sean Taylor's careers were cut short. They could be in that conversation.

Forgot about him. Definitely in that tier after Lott and Reed.

Ed Reed. To me, the thing that made him a little different than the other elite safeties of my football watching years (Polamalu, Taylor, Bob Sanders, etc...) is how good he was after he made the interception or recovered the fumble. He's the all time leader in interception return yards and scored 13 TDs in his career. For a Ravens team that didn't always have the best offense, his ability to intercept a pass and then flip the field on the return was invaluable.

And Ronnie Lott is the best in my lifetime.

Bingo. Dude cut off part of a finger because it was affecting his play. He was the epitome of a badass.

He had the tip of his left pinky finger amputated after the 1985 season when it was crushed while tackling running back Timmy Newsome, and a bone graft surgery would not have allowed him to start the 1986 season.

Ronnie Lott was an 8 time first team All-Pro which is insane:
