Because they still have the #1 ranked class in the country even though they are completely dysfunctional. The access to the kind of talent they have is essentially unmatched. Unlike the Texas and Florida schools, they only have one serious local competitor and other than Notre Dame and occasionally Oregon, don't have a lot of programs coming in and snatching up the top local prospects.

They are absolutely terrible at hiring coaches. Their last seven, other than Carroll, have been complete duds.

It really is an easy place to win for any decent coach.

Gotta think they will go after Sumlin hard. If I'm Sumlin, I take it. A&M will never be dominant in the West just because of how many good teams there are. He could have them winning the Pac12 South pretty consistently just with the recruits he would get.
