Your kind of a rocket scientist, eh?

And the NFL cant sell out 8 fricking home games. 8 fricking home games, on a sunday, once a week. You have like 8 teams who sell out, and thats because of tickets sold, not butts in seats.

Baseball is much more watchable now which has helped a ton. Games are 2.5 hrs instead of 4 hours. The pacing has saved it in my opinion.

I’ve watched every game of the Detroit Tigers the last few years and it’s been enjoyable except for the fact that they seem to love blowing leads.

Baseball will never die. Same with hockey. Parents taking second mortgages for travel ball so little Jimmy can live the dream which is play juco ball and get his gf pregnant before dropping out and becoming an alcoholic. It will be ups and downs but baseball will still always come along in April

Not really. MLB season runs just about 6 months - March 26th through September 27th. Game 7 of the World Series if necessary will be Oct. 31st.

Opening day for NFL is September 9th. Week 18 will be January 10th - 5 months. The Super Bowl will be Feb. 14th.

NBA season started October 21st, ended April 12th. The Finals won’t even begin until June 4th.

So, start to finish the MLB season is a max 7 months, NFL is 6ish months, and the NBA season is basically 8 months long. NHL is basically the same as NBA.

Stadium attendance/capacity is always an interesting discussion. Outside of the teams playing in minor league stadiums last year, the bottom 3 MLB teams by attendance got like 14k-18k fans per game. If that sounds bad, consider that in the NHL/NBA, there might be a couple arenas that get 20k but generally a sellout is 16k-18k fans. So the "bad" attendance MLB teams would still sellout NHL/NBA arenas all season long. Now factor in MLB teams play about double the amount of games as those other two leagues. By just the raw numbers, more people are going to MLB games than those other two leagues and its not even close.

I assume they make much more money than you think. With 80+ home games a year they don't need 50k fans in attendance.

This is anecdotal but probably points to what baseball is versus other sports. I went to a MN twins games last year on a random Tues night when they were out of the playoff running.

I was blown away by how many people were there and engaged with the game / having a good time. The amount of families and kids is impressive, and hoards of young teenagers too. It was just a great atmosphere.

Baseball seems more of an atmosphere / spectator sport than other sports. There aren't drunk trashy dudes with oversized jerseys picking fights. You go to the ballpark to hang with the family, eat a few hotdogs and drink a beer.

Lots of folks pointing to attendence but I'd guess the majority of MLB revenue comes from corporate sponsorship deals, media rights and other outside revenue streams (stadium mgt, real estate)

The Braves made more profit from the Battery than they did from all the revenue generated from attendence, media rights etc.

MLB seems to be doing fine to me

I hear more casual MLB talk than anything else in my circles save CFB. Granted, these are pretty WASPy circles.

The resurgence of card culture (such as it is) has helped some. I also sense people are annoyed with some how NFL/NBA tracks some of our less desirable cultural trends and see baseball as classic, wholesome, simple (which it is, comparatively).

Went to the two weekend Rangers games this weekend, which was my first MLB in person attendance since childhood...and I was astonished at just how many people were there and how much money was flowing. I know I dropped a mint for my family of 4 to enjoy the weekend.

From a 10k foot view....one can see how OP comes to the conclusion that the sport is dying. Mainstream sports media doesn't care until October...a random week game in June doesn't have the same pop as a Sunday NFL game...etc etc.

But all said - I agree with a poster earlier that said it's a nice reprieve for 2.5 hours, not worried about people getting in fights, just chilling in America.

So you saw the Rangers take 2 out of 3 from the Cubs.

Speaking of the Cubs, if you haven't been paying attention they're pretty dang good this year. Wrigley has been packed and the place is jumping.

Take a kid to an MLB game and watch their eyes light up. The crowd, the smell of the ballpark, the entire atmosphere is something to soak in, even in a half full stadium.

Heck, my 9 year old will fire up the MLB app on the TV and watch a Cubs game on his own. Kids are into baseball.

The ones complaining about empty stadiums need to go back and look at attendance in "the golden age". Not good.

Every once in awhile while taking Uber, the driver, instead of listening to some sham music like auto tune Pop, will be listening to the Ball game (and the driver is always semi-retired looking)...

This I can understand.... Not a terrible way to pass the time in a Car.

Or if you're younger, don't have a family or steady employment, I can see someone passing the time during the afternoon, midweek at the Ballpark,, munching on hotdogs.

For everyone in the middle... Following MLB steadily has never made practical sense unless you were the guy in the past who just checked the Standings in the morning paper while sipping your Coffee before work. Its a good question by the OP....because Baseball fandom by working America has never made practical sense.

I'm well aware of the Cubs hot streak that was ended...the rest of my family are all big Cubs fans. Was a long, quiet ride back to Louisiana

I'm not gonna be a poser...I took a big break from baseball for a long period. Watched the mid-to-late 90s Rangers, Pudge was my hero, watched through the Hamilton years...kinda fell off around 2012 as far as watching. But the trip reinvigorated me, I enjoyed it a lot.

I live in San Antonio. Our local baseball team is the padres double AA affiliate; the missions. The stadium is in one of the crappiest parts of town to live in or get to. There are no bars or restaurants around. Despite this, there is always a pretty good attendance at these games. Some die hard fans.

The team also sucks, but who cares?

I can only imagine if we had an MLB team.

People just love baseball. I am one of these people.
