Yeah it does. I tore my knee up at the beginning of practice. Had to wait two hours and they at least helped me to my car. Drive home and parents took me to a hospital. Had to get knee reconstruction the next day. If that would have happened now, coaches and school would have been sued big time.

No better feeling in the world than when coaches let you take the pads off for sprints at the end of practice

And the worst when dumb asses would jump offsides causing you to run more

Bull in the ring was completely retarded

I think we called it Bull in the Ring, or something like that. But basically the premise is that there's 1 person in the middle. Then there's like 15 people standing in a circle surrounding you. One at a time, these guys run full speed at you trying to knock your head off.

I'm pretty sure I got about 10 concussions from that one drill alone.

The other one, was a team punishment because a single teammate got into a fight at school. But basically we had to do bear crawls, down and back the length of the football field=1. We had 4 of those.

Have you ever thrown up, and then fell face first into said throw up because you were too weak to move your body? Yea.

we called it "Dog eat Dog" 2 players head to head over a plank of wood between the 2 player's feet. no rules really. The coach would blow whistle and it was on til coach blew whistle again. The player who stood their ground the best was declared the winner.
A lot of fights broke out during this drill. lol
And that plank of wood drew a lot of blood.

Depending on who you got matched up against it can be brutal.

I’m about to puke thinking about gassers, up/downs, bear crawl. I had to do the ring with a 240 lb Linebacker; it did NOT end well for me.

Being 6’3” and about 175#s, Oklahoma drills were the worst for me. I always got matched up with the LBers or DEs

One day I kept getting pushed back and the coaches were mocking me because all I had to do was get past just one guy. Finally had enough and just dove over him. Had to run sprints the rest of practice but at least no more Oklahoma drills that day.

Anything to do with sprinting was always my biggest enemy. When it came to actual football drills though, bull in the ring was always where I got the shite beat out of me. I loved Hamburger Drills, Oklahoma Drill, etc, but I hated bull in the ring.

The phrase bull in the ring scares me to this day. Got beat to hell and back daily.

Another tough one that was actually kinda funny...first day of Jr high basketball practice, about 60 guys show up. Head coach couldn't make it so he sent a scrub Jr high basketball coach and told him to cut the roster down. He told us to run 3 miles to where he was waiting in his truck and turn around and run back to the gym. Gave us 45 minutes to do it. Every minute beyond the 45 minute mark you had to run one suicide. Two of us made it back under 45 minutes.

The next day was a much more manageable number of players. And I'll own up to the fact that I was playing basketball because of bull in the ring.

Two instantly come to mind. Not football though.

In wrestling practice, one of the drills was me in the middle, then I had to wrestle each person until one of us got a take down. Win or lose, you get right back up and deal w/ the next person. No stalling whatsoever. 10 minutes straight of that shite. Seemed like an eternity. When they talk about "embracing the grind", those drills are where I learned it. I'm there, but I'm not "there" if that makes any sense.

In MMA we'd do "wall crawls". You start w/ your butt on the ground, back against the cage and one person on each leg basically in mount position on each leg. You'd have to get to your feet by pushing their head to the side and down to make room for your hips to move one side, then the other, slowly bending your legs so you can finally get your feet kind of planted to work your way up the wall. We did that shite for 3 5 min rounds. Brutal

Surprised they paired a linebacker with a clarinet player for that drill

We did some stupid shite when I was in high school from 86-89. The aforementioned bull in the ring, and we'd go over to these hills by our baseball field and play king of the hill in pads. I'm surprised a knee or two wasn't blown out. We did the gauntlet, but the dumbest drill we did was a runner got on the sideline in the back of the endzone. A tackler got at about the 15 yd line in the middle of the field. The runner had to run straight no jukes or defending themselves, while the tackler ran as fast as he could and knocked the hell out of the defenseless runner. Pretty much a blindside hit. You'd get pelted into the sideline fence. One guy got a big knot on his head through his helmet. I'm surprised someone didn't get paralyzed or seriously injured.

End of freshman year, going into sophomore year, I decided to skip spring practice one day. Figured since I barely played, my coaches wouldn’t notice. The next day after our post-practice huddle, the head coach goes, “If I call your name, stay with me.” Sure enough, he called mine.

We did bear rolls, bear crawls, and wind sprints for who knows how long. The bear crawls were the absolute worst. Needless to say but I never missed another practice after that

Indian run in the heat was awful because we would do it near the end of practice. Doing it when you're already gassed from everything else makes it so much worse than it is in a vacuum.

But I will say it prepared us for the season. Being at a small school you had a lot of the bigger and/or more athletic guys playing both sides of the ball. I was built like DE, but because we didn't have many big guys I ended up playing LT on offense and nose on defense in what was basically a 3-3-5 defense. So I was double teamed on defense, sometimes triple teamed, and then had to pass pro and run block on offense. Games wore my arse out. Thankfully we did rotate on defense enough that I wasn't expected out there for every snap.

The box in high school . 10 feet long and 4 feet tall . Solid wood on sides and slats of wood on the top . Coach stood on th top and one player on one side and one on the other . Coach blew the whistle and it was who could push the the other player out . It got brutal .

Probably Money Rolls and Oklahoma Drills, old coach loved doing those on the Kenner Leprechauns back in the late 80s.

After pranking my head coach I had to run 9 of these

We did gassers with leg lifts. After one particularly bad loss, we did them for damn near an entire practice. Goal to goal ten times. Leg lifts. More gassers. Leg lifts. On a Monday. Parents were waiting for us in the parking lot with the their headlights on.
