The worst conditioning I remember was 10 trips down the field. We lined up by position groups, so WR/DB were together, then RB/LB, then QBs and Safety, and finally OL/DL.

It started out pretty simple. Start at the goal line and sprint through the 10 yard line, then jog to the other goal line. Once you got to the other end, you'd space out a little so the other groups had room to run through, but as soon as the last group, the linemen, finished, you started over. Except this time it was sprint through the 20 yard line then jog to the other goal line. Add 10 yards each time.

The catch was that if the coach saw someone not sprint through the yard line, or slow their jog before the goal line, the entire team had to do that distance again. Up until 60 yards or so everyone was fine, but those last 4 where you were sprinting 70, 80, 90, and 100 yards, some of the fatties were giving out and we'd have to repeat. Of course this was the first practice of the year in early August in the south Alabama heat and humidity.

Bull in the ring was miserable. We had this thing called "meet, hit, in" at the end of each practice. We'd "hit a knee" and hear how we needed to "get better" and all of that stuff and then go back to our position groups for one more good, solid tackle. The problem was after you made "your" tackle you had to go over and catch a pitch and run absolutely straight up like a mannequin and the get plowed yourself. Ugh.

Bull in the ring is probably the reason I walk into a room and forget why I went in.

The worst thing I ever had to do as a football “drill” was a punishment I had to do for pranking my Spanish teacher. I had to lay down and roll the entire length of the field and back. I have never thrown up so much in my life. I had a buddy of mine that was walking near me giving me water, so I had something to vomit.

But you know what, I didn’t burn any more wooden chalk trays with her coffee warmer.

Bull in the ring. It’s now outlawed

I had an a-hole coach that used bull in the ring as a punishment drill. If you made mistakes in a game, you'd have to do that drill on Tuesday until you couldn't get up from the hits. The guy was intentionally getting kids injured. I saw one poor guy basically go at the drill for what seemed like 15 minutes until he finally got knocked out cold and concussed. We had more guys out during the year from that drill than anything that actually happened on the field. Thankfully that guy got fired after one year.

Bear Crawl

We did 10yd bear crawls as part of our warmup agility drills but the worst was the 100yd bear crawls if you missed practice. Down and back for a total of 200yds. The skinny guys had the technique, though, with their hands only hitting the ground about once every 5 yds! Us big boys didn't have that hip mobility!

I got completely flattened in a big cat drill once.

I also got decked, I mean the wind completely knocked out of me, by a corner when running a crossing pattern. It was a flag football game

That corner went on to be a starter in the NFL.

I would choose Oklahoma drill or any tackling drill over running 110’s everyday of the week

This and it is not even close. I would do Oklahoma drills against a gorilla everyday over running 110's in the Louisiana humid arse heat. Especially coming off of laying around doing jack shite all Summer and back in the 80's there was no concept of hydration. Water was like the enemy at football practice.

Two cones around 5 feet apart to mark the chute. Two more cones 10 yards apart as the starting points. Two players in the drill lying on their backs, helmets pointing toward each other, one at each of the 10 yard cones, one with a football. At the whistle, spring to your feet and run full speed toward the other player, with the path being between the two five feet apart cones. Really just amounted to this

over and over again until coach got tired of it. This was before the “heads up” coaching point. It was a miracle no one was paralyzed or broke their neck.

Yeah crab walks/bear crawls sucked. When I played JV in 9th grade, we had too many guys trying out for the team. Our coach decided the only fair way to cut down numbers was to make us bear crawl around the field until enough guys quit

When I played youth football, we had a guy on our team named Javier Arenas on the team who ended up playing at Alabama and the NFL. Our dumb coach decided to do Oklahoma drills from 25 yards apart. Javier was smaller and went low on the guy he was going against to tackle him and snapped the other guys leg in half. It was brutal.

Surprised they paired a linebacker with a clarinet player for that drill

Drummer, but close. It was typically with our position groups (WR/DB) in my case.

Bull in the ring.. Form a circle, one guy in the middle. Coach calls somebody's number and they run at him full speed. Continue until the coach decides to put somebody else in the middle.

Board drills. Three point stance at each end of a 10 foot long 1x6 board and meet in the middle.

We used to run several 40s and a couple of 100s at the end of practice. We went on a snap count and if somebody jumped it didnt count. If we messed up enough we had to start over from the beginning. One day we ended up running 18 40s and 10 100s. No lights on the practice field and we ran the last ones in pitch dark.

Not football but running laps around the gym wearing a teammate as a backpack in wrestling practice.

People have no idea what a hard practice is if they have never been apart of wrestling. Football practice has nothing on wrestling practice, just ask the guys who participated in both sports and they'll tell you.
