Every time I read an article about these things, they say the women are playing at half speed and just getting in some cardio.

unathletic, overweight, bad basketball players are obviously not going to beat a WNBA team.

An elite high school team that is comprised of athletic, skilled, normal weight, good basketball players would. Which is what people are saying.
ehh... I’m saying my team of 24-34 year olds could mop the floor with them

There was a dude posting on Reddit who was losing his mind when people were suggesting that WNBA players would lose to college, HS...or even some NBA players.

He was legit convinced that Sue Bird would wipe the floor with Tim Frazier.

What a load.

A men's HS State Champion team would absolutely house a team of WNBA All-Stars.

A WNBA team is about equivalent to a very good team of 8th graders.

I dont think you would see many people dispute that. Im just disputing thr idea that your average Joe who has got cut from his high school team would be able to compete, but because he made 3 3 pointers at the Y last weekend he swear he is Steph curry.

Decent male athletes >WNBA athletes > average Joes

Have you watched a WNBA game? It's bad basketball, trust me. Again, I have no issue saying that women are better than me at sports. Women's tennis players on the WTA Tour would kick my arse. But, watch a few games of WNBA, I think you will be shocked at how low the quality is.

Absolutely, it is all about athleticism. Basketball is a game where you can get by on being athletic alone. Thats why you have a large amount of college ball players who have almost 0 basketball skill or IQ, but because they are fast and can jump out the gym they excel. A male that is in good shape and as really athletic, who knows how to play basketball could fare very well and likely win against WNBA players. Less than that the guys will get killed.

Games such as tennis, you can't get by on athleticism. I struggle hard beating my wife in tennis. Meanwhile she would never play me in basketball because it would be no fun. And im absolutely terrible at basketball.

Nobody disagrees with this. The place where it gets questionable is when guys who are in fact average joes think they are good athletes. We were all better than we really were at whatever given sport, but this seems to get amplified in the discussion of "can you beat a chick".

I agree that the gap between females and males is smaller in tennis than it is in basketball, but it is still quite significant. Serena Williams is on the level of a good but not great college tennis player. Anybody playing in the NCAA finals singles draw destroys her.

What defines “good athlete”?

I don’t consider myself very athletic, but I’m 6’2 and I can dunk. That alone sets me apart from 99% of players on WNBA history.

Story from USA Today about Venus and Serena Williams and their match against a out of shape male player in his 30’s that was ranked in the 200’s.

quote:

So they marched themselves into the men’s ATP office to announce rather confidently they were ready to beat any tour player ranked around the Top 200 if someone wanted to take the challenge. It just so happened that Karsten Braasch of Germany, once a top-40 player, but at the time ranked 203rd, was in ear shot. He thought it would be fun so stepped up to say he’d be happy to take them on.

quote:

The date was set and the day arrived. Braasch played a warmup round of golf in the morning, then came to Melbourne Park. The threesome went out to a back court where each sister would have a one-set shot at Braasch. Word had spread around the grounds that the event wsa taking place, which caused tournament officials to restrict admittance to the area to only those with badges. Braasch would smoke cigarettes and sip beer during the changeovers, and to be honest no longer looked the part of a fit professional athlete. It made no matter. Braasch led 5-0 over Serena before winning the set 6-1, and then posted a 6-2 set victory over Venus.

I've said it before: The Peabody Warhorses would beat any WNBA team, and make UConn and Baylor women cry.

"likely win"

the athleticism difference in an AVERAGE male (both in terms of athleticism and current fitness) and WNBA star is huge

if you're like 6-1 and of average athleticism, no WNBA player can stop you in the post (the easiest place for a non-athlete to play)

if you're 6-5 and an average athlete (including coordination) you would be the most unstoppable force in women's history

from just this data point, i will confidently say that you could be the GOAT women's player with very little training/skill

I would think most men’s college players could beat the best women in the world. Serve and return being most of difference, but also they just work the ball more.

Take any tournament team from the NCAAM and they would destroy the WNBA all star team. It would be something like 140-30

Didn’t the University of Tennessee women’s team, the one that won the national title undefeated and unchallenged one year play the Tennessee men’s high school state champ and get absolutely mud stomped?

If that tournament team decided to press all game, the WNBA team may not be able to cross halfcourt.
