A little background. I am an assistant coach at a small school in OK. Ive been coaching for 20+ years and this is up there on my crazy shite o meter. Throughout my career ive unfortunately been through several 0-10 seasons.

This season, we look like we are going to hit 0-10 again, but that isnt the crazy part. We started the season with about 20 kids and as the season has drawn on, our numbers have started to dwindle. We are down to 12 bodies for this week and are on the road at a top 10 team in our class. We were at practice this week preparing and my QB looks at me and says, "Coach, i dont feel safe doing this". Due to numbers which leads to player safety, our head coach wants to pull the plug on the season. The problem is, the superintendent wont let us cancel the season due to the "pride of the town". The sup comes to the locker room before walk through yesterday. He brings all the players in coaches into the locker room to talk to us. He said hes originally from the town so he knows their hardships. He tells us a few stories from his career. Then tells us he doesnt have any quit in him. If we have 12, then we will go to battle with 12.

So the HC doesnt want to play the game. The kids dont want to play. But the superintendent wants to play for the pride of the town. Personally i think its a terrible idea to go play. What do baws on tRant think?

Have HC send email to the sup advising that the HC intends to forfeit the game for the players safety. Have the email cite any published supports for not playing with only 12. Have the email document the player’s voiced concern for safety. Dont ask for permission or approval, but just to give notice with well reasoned support.

First thing I would do is have a meeting with the Parents. Get their perspective on this situation. The team has spoken, the coaching staff has spoken, the Sup has spoken, so the parents should have a voice in this also. I would explain to the parents the reason the coaching staff decided to pull the plug on the season. And also, how their child feels about not playing.

Player safety should be your NUMBER 1 priority. After that, I would begin to try to build up the football program by getting involved with the local Jr. High schools and establishing an interest at that level. Elementary also. Build from the ground up. Hope this helps.

I talked with another sup from another school and told him what was going on. He said get the school board involved. I told him I doubt our school board knows what is actually going on. So i may or may not have called our booster club president and told him the situation. I told him he needed to shake the bushes in town for us.

Bad news: high school football isn’t important. Pull the plug.

Yeah, if your town is that small, the HC and yourself should 100% know the coaches at those levels. My hometown was about 2,000 people and we were running our HS's offense starting in 7th grade already. As cheesy as it sounds, you need to start building a program starting at the Jr. High level

This town isnt even that big. Football here has really struggled lately. If they move on from this HS due to this, it will be the 6th HC in 6 years.

So the school started the season with 20 players. Common sense says this late in he season there would be about 15 or so players available. Play the game or drop football altogether.

Call a temp agency and bring in some bodies.

Kind of a tough situation. Small towns live for their football teams. And are full of gossip too.

Best outcome is you play and after first play 2 players fake an injury. Can’t play with 10 so auto forfeit.

Been in a similar situation but with 18 and not 12. The HC would call the opposing HC over the weekend preceding the game and tell them the situation and basically beg for mercy. They typically agreed to rest many starters, play a majority jv players and run the clock after it was 21-0.

I’ve been in a similar situation, but with basketball. My concern wasn’t injuries, but we had 5 guys, maybe 2 of which could actually play well, and the opponent would be a fully stacked roster. The other coach could tell that eligibility had hit us hard and knew when to call off the dogs.

I’d chat with the other coach, and if I had a guy or two with a hint of an injury, I’d sit him out. The safety element is key here, and there’s zero need for some kid to get rocked because he’s absolutely gassed in a second half blowout. There’s no “town pride” in that.

If all the kids call in sick, nothing else you can do but forfeit the game.

Just saying.

And the Superintendent sounds like a world class POS.

Actually, if you are at 12 kids, you only need 2 kids to call in sick and you have to forfeit.

I think you should tell the superintendent to kick rocks and start finding a new school district to work in.

If you only have 12 players you shouldn't play the game and that superintendent needs to get fired for trying to force the issue. It's 100% a safety issue and if he can't understand that he's not fit to make decisions involving kids.
