His stats were kind of mediocre. Maybe it is not fair to compare QB stats of that era to the modern "pass happy" era?

165 TD
141 INT
81.6 QBR

Also had a HOF WR, all time rushhing leader, a HOF TE, and multiple All-Pros on his line.

Seems to me that he’s properly rated. He’s in the hall of fame, but no one really considers him one of the truly great quarterbacks of all time.

I think so.

Those cowboy teams were so loaded the only thing the QB had to do was not screw up.

I wouldn't say overrated. He did what he needed to do to win. Game manager? Sure. He's only in the HOF because he won 3 Super Bowls.

I do have an issue with some of his "Pro Bowls"

In three of his Pro Bowl's, these were his stats:

2,754 yards 11 TD - 10 INT
2,676 yards 13 TD - 12 INT
3,126 yards 12 TD - 13 INT

When Jim Everett was the NFL's Passing TD leader in 1988 and 1989 and he didn't make the Pro Bowl with these numbers:

3,964 yards 31 TD - 18 INT
4,310 yards 29 TD - 17 INT

Just shows you how much of a popularity contest it is.

Maybe a little. Seems like most would have him being a good QB that benefitted from having a great team around him. But even with great weapons you still have to deliver the ball, and he did that well enough to win three chips. So it seems like most people likely have him properly rated.

ETA: As a TV announcer? Most definitely.

Aikman was basically the head coach of the Cowboys third Super Bowl win due to Barry Switzer’s incompetence. Not overrated.

Interceptions don't get you benched like they do nowadays because you didn't have these spread concepts every team runs that get guys wide open.

Aikman is simultaneous a great QB in his time but also a bit overrated.

You could say this about Joe Montana minus the RB part, but he didn't have scrubs. And his WR was a lot better than Aikman's.

I don't see anyone saying he's near the top of the list. I think he's rated about where he should be. He won 3 superbowls but he couldn't carry a team deep in the playoffs alone like Elway or Rodgers.

A little.

Very good game manager on teams that were among the most loaded with talent in NFL history

To be fair, TD numbers being down is fine because they had an elite running game to pound it in. But everything else is kinda eh. Elite game manager.

Just for comparison sake of his 6 pro bowl seasons:

1991 - 2nd in completion %, 5th in YPG, 4th in YPA, 22nd in TD%; this is the unique outlier but elite run game in the redzone fixes a lot of TD woes.

1992 - 5th in completion%, 6th in YPG, 9th in YPA, 5th in TD%, 3rd in passer rating
- Earned

1993 - 1st in completion%, 4th in YPG, 2nd in YPA, 11th in TD%, 2nd in passer rating
- Earned

1994 - 2nd in completion%, 16th in YPG, 2nd in YPA, 16th in TD%, 6th in passer rating
- Not earned

1995 - 2nd in completion%, 17th in YPG, 4th in YPA, 21st in TD%, 3rd in passer rating
- Not earned

1996 - 2nd in completion%, 14th in YPG, 15th in YPA, 29th in TD%, 12th in passer rating
- not earned

Steve Young was definitely not overrated. However, Aikman is in the category with Namath and Bradshaw. Bradshaw was on a loaded team as an average QB same as Aikman. Namath is in there just because he called his shot as a huge underdog and won the game.

Overrated a bit as QB, but very much underrated as far as the leader of the organization. He was an equal part of the three headed leadership trio of Jimmy, Jerry, and Troy. When Jimmy left Troy took over that leadership that Barry never really grasped. There have been similarly talented cowboys teams since that haven’t had near the success. I think a good part of that is the off the field stuff Troy brought.

As a player yes.

As a leader I dont think so. That was a lot of personality to corral.

He was very underrated as a leader.

But as a quarterback he was nothing special.

Aikman was QB in a vertical passing game. He threw the ball down field, so naturally his Int ratio would be higher. But the guy won 3 super bowls. If Steve Young is not overrated (made a career of slants to elite WR) then neither is Troy Aikman.

Even at the time people kind of questioned him, he was never mentioned as one of the 2 or 3 best QBs in football and it was understood even when he was still playing that he was only going to make the hall because of team accomplishments.

So I would say no he’s properly rated and always has been.
