Hopefully, the graphic is accurate but I found it interesting. The midrange shot is a lost art.

All risk reward in that chart. Feels like it’s the transition from feels like a good idea to data says it’s actually the right idea.

That said, cool chart if accurate

Shift toward 3’s in b-ball, similarly football has gone toward the pass. What gives millennials?

Analytics. The teams that don't use them quickly get left in the dust.

Midrange is the least points per attempt on the court, so why shoot it?

Wow that’s crazy, one of my old coaches back in 2001 hated us shooting midrange shots. He would say step back and shoot the 3 or drive to the rack.

Midrange might not be the best shot but it is the most difficult to score and also the most fun to watch when players create shots there

It’s why Jordan is quoted on film explaining why he preferred the midrange game. 3ball chucking bored him. Wasn’t enough of a challenge. No artistry.

Not that surprising even playing middle and high school basketball in the 2000-2010 years our coaches would drill that it’s better to step back for a 3 or make an extra pass than to pull up for a long 2, and that was without analytical data points. It’s just common sense.

I mean only a few options —

Make it harder to drive or generally less efficient inside

Create more space in the midrange

A) I highly doubt he ever said that.

B) If he wanted a challenge, he could have tried improving his lifelong 32.7 percent three point shooting average.

what if the three point line was a box instead of an arc?

Give less foul calls on guys driving. The ticky tack touch on the wrist resulting in two easy FTs keep people driving and not pulling up.

Player safety rules also. Just like players going over the middle in football with no fear, drives to the goal used to mean risk taking a hard foul. That deterrent is gone.

You score more points by shooting 3 of 8 from three than 4 of 8 from 2.

37.5 percent team shooting from 3 is more likely than 50 percent shooting from 2.
