A while back he went on Stephen A. Smith’s show and talked about what he sees as the mediocrity of today’s NFL game. Smith recently got him to talk in front of a live audience and expound upon his thoughts from back then.
He blames inferior coaching and also takes a shot at development at the collegiate level, specifically the transfer portal.

I don't think the gameplay is necessarily mediocre, what's mediocre is the product for the audience.
Commercials and penalties have made games almost unwatchable. If not for gambling, fantasy football and multi-game viewing I think they'd actually see it in the numbers but unfortunately it's not apparent.
Goodell said something really smart not too long ago in that the NFL's competition isn't the NBA and other pro leagues, it's Apple, Netflix, etc. They're competing for attention. And the more they drown out the game with non-play, the more people are going to divert their attention elsewhere.
That's my opinion.

I'll use Kirby only becuase he's who I'm familiar with, but his whole career was built on recreuiting really talented guys obviously, but coaching the shite out of them and squeezing every ounce of developemnt out of them. Guys like javon bullard, jordan davis, devonte wyatt, eric stokes, and probably hundreds of other examples come to mind. Those guys game in without as much fanfare as others and worked themselves into AA or 1st round pick kinda players because of staying in the program for 3-4 years.
Now with the portal you don't have that. You have guys that may go to UGA for 1 season and sit on the bench then leave for a higher payday. Or the flip side, a guy may go get "developed" (shittily) somewhere else for 2 years then come to UGA and us have to essentially start his learning from scratch.
When it comes to actually preparing guys to be the very best overall football players possible before entering the NFL, the portal is absolutely a fricking killer. there isn't any defense to the contrary. It's common sense.

Oh cry me a river. If they are worried about player development then the NFL needs to start a minor league to develop players. The college coaches job is to win games not develop players for the NFL

Brady took a few good shots early in his career that would draw immediate flags today.
Yes, he received protection treatment later in his career like you see Mahomes getting, but he started in the early 2000s when hitting the QB wasn't yet completely illegal.

Or maybe a big problem is personal foul penalty flags being thrown anytime a QB is touched and pass interference being called 95% of the time when a pass play is broken up.

Old guy claiming everything was better “back in the day” is as predictable as sun rises in east. I guarantee you there were guys pushing 50 talking about how the league was declining when Brady was playing and the same before that.

The NFL has been transitioning into a pass happy, arena-football type sport for the past 25 years. You think dudes just figured out how to make 4000+ yard seasons normal?
If defenses could actually be physical with receivers and could jack up the QB with a few good hits, do you think we’d see teams averaging 40 passes per game?
I think eras of yesteryear were better “football” than now. And I don’t say that as some old dude.

All of this true.
But these decision makers never consider that maximizing immediate profits isn’t the same thing as maximizing profits.
There is a non-zero chance that make the product bad enough, while making it incrementally more profitable, that they chase away enough customers that long term they make less money overall.
The issue is with that is it’s comparing an objective profit with a less objective opportunity cost. So the now always wins.
