Sorry bro, I don’t follow college football enough to know every god damn player’s name on a fricking team that I don’t follow
I do know when I was watching the game last night, the announcer kept saying that this dude transferred from Texas A&M, this dude transferred from Georgia, this dude transferred from Michigan, this new dude transferred from Colorado, etc etc etc

More like this far, it’s enabled the football factories to poach more from G5 programs, especially when combined with NIL where the Bamas, LSUs, Ohio States, etc of the world no longer have to do their player buying under the table.

The transfer rule, when combined with NIL, is killing college football

This is a bad take. Schools don’t stay great forever. They typically have runs of greatness followed by mediocrity. bama is the exception, not the rule.
Ex. LSU has a run every four or five years. Remember when USC was unbeatable for a four or five year window? Clemson was bad for a decade, then slowly built up and is now going back down. The ACC was set up the way it was because FSU and Miami were considered too powerful to be in the same division. A decade later and they are both has-beens. UGA will have its run then come back to median.
The transfer portal just allows guys like DeMarcus Ware (Troy), Khalil Mack (Buffalo), Jason Taylor (Akron) or Willie Roaf (La. Tech) to get picked up by bigger schools that can pay more money to them with no repercussions.
And now recruiting doesn’t matter anyway. If I was a coach at a big time school, I’m developing a feeder system where I can stash players to develop then bring in when they are RS jrs & srs.
I love college football. But my interest has been greatly diminished.

Small schools may get lucky one year, but the diamond in the rough players they discover will transfer out the next year. The portal is horrible for small school
Depends on the culture you bring to the school. A lot of big time schools like Florida tried to take Michael Pratt from Tulane but Fritz built a culture there that had him want to stay. Spears even wanted to stay but Fritz told him no you’re going to the NFL.

No, but it is a better start to life than 99.999% of us.

How many of them are getting $2 million deals? It can't be that many. Guys w/crazy deals like Manning are an outlier.

TBH, the only reason why the transfer portal is so popular currently (especially for QB’s), is because of what Joe Burrow did at LSU, which makes both the players and programs thirsty to try and duplicate it.
It won’t be duplicated, but it’s just another way Joe Burrow revolutionized the game of football.

quote:Works both ways. And probably more often that its a star player for a lesser program that goes into the portal and ends up at a powerhouse program where they can make more NIL money and possibly play for a playoff contender than the other way around.
The transfer portal might have saved college football
It has given smaller programs an actual chance to compete against the “football factories”
Now mid-level programs get rewarded by having their best players hit the portal to go play for an elite program...after those big schools overlooked them coming out of high school or weren't going to have a chance for playing time as a freshman or sophomore.

quote:Well if you're a backup QB to a solidly entrenched starter, then the portal may be your only option if you ever want to play meaningful snaps...depending on how many years of eligibility you and the starter ahead of you each have left. I can't blame a player who'd otherwise be riding the bench for using the portal to go somewhere that'll provide a chance to play

What’s stupid statement.
College football was never in danger of needing saving. The transfer portal and NIL has put into motion things that have the potential to kill college football…although the most likely scenario is it stays immensely popular.

Basically college football now has unrestricted free agency. Put in sitting out one year if you transfer and it may help slow down the transferring.

2. FCS and group of 5 (and even D2) have been getting power 5 transfers for years now, that’s not new. What’s beginning to happen now is that anyone who has a big year at the smaller level is moving up. True studs aren’t staying at the lower levels anymore.
Yep. It’s been a gut punch for tech this year. Very good WR and LB bolted for greener pastures. Granted our problems are much deeper than our best players leaving, but for other schools in a similar situation, it’s a killer.

I do not like the NIL and transfer portal.
I will say I glad the culture of high school superstars going to play 3rd string is somewhat over. That has to be the dumbest thing. It was the culture of wanting to be on a winner instead of making it happen. I still think it is a problem, but it never made sense.
I have definitely lost interest in college football with the constantly expanding playoffs, the constant mulligans for favorite teams, and now all the constant transfers.
