The toughest schedule being played in LHSAA class 5A this year is… (not who you think)

I found the state ranking of every opponent a 5A team has and added them up and divided by the games played…

It’s not Karr. The defending select state champs play a formidable Catholic League schedule and Ruston in the Superdome as a nondistrict blockbuster, but the games against #88 Huntington and #85 Chalmette bring it down just a notch.

It’s not Ruston. They go all over the map playing top teams from three states (and do have the strongest nonselect schedule), but their games against #101 Pineville and #214 Peabody drop their average just enough.

It’s not Catholic of Baton Rouge. They have four different states represented, but also #65 Liberty Magnet and #78 Woodlawn of Baton Rouge.

It’s not John Curtis. #61 Lafayette Renaissance in week 3 drops them below the top. It is John Curtis until week 10 when they face Chalmette.

The toughest schedule being played in Louisiana 5A in 2026 belongs to the Brother Martin Crusaders.

W1 @ Southside
W2 @ St. Paul’s
W3 @ Warren Easton
W4 @ Jesuit*
W5 Karr*
W6 Rummel*
W7 @ John Curtis*
W8 St. Augustine*
W9 @ Chalmette*
W10 @ Holy Cross*

It doesn’t have the out of state flash of other elite LA teams, but there are no weak spots until Chalmette (and we’re not a weak 5A team, just weak for the Catholic League). Easton Royal will have a battle every week, but that’s why he is who he is.

Brother Martin 23.7
John Curtis 24.5
Catholic BR 25.4
Holy Cross 25.7
Rummel 26.6
Jesuit 30.8
Karr 32
St. Augustine 33.9
Ruston 38.5
Zachary 38.7
West Monroe 43.5
Central 46.5
Chalmette 49.4
C.E. Byrd 51.2
Alexandria 52.2
Huntington 53.6

*I’ll probably remake this list later, but with the best and worst opponent for each team dropped from the calculation, and probably another one with just non district games factored in, since teams you’re forced to play can skew things

The worst schedules are all found in district 8-5A, the JP district. Warren Easton’s is good in nondistrict play, and finishes as the best in 8-5A, but the district schedule puts them even behind Haughton, the worst schedule in the rest of the state.

Did you really type all that out for some high school football strength of schedule debate?

Are we not next door to Texas?

Yes I see that other thread. It doesn’t count until high school

Really it’s 8 in the NOLA area, 1 on the Northshore, and 1 in Lafayette… home and away is a pretty meaningless distinction when it’s just a different PA announcer and sitting on the other side of Tad Gormley

I don’t personally know one person who is super interested in high school sports after leaving high school. At least not enough to talk about it on the internet.

If your kid isn’t on the team, a coach, or you aren’t making money off them by being in the slightly creepy world of college recruiting, i just kinda don’t get it.

You do you though.

I don’t know anyone who really cares what golf score our president shot but that’s a thread…

We love LSU (and all the other college teams in LA), don’t we? Where do we think all the players come from?

it’s a common theme for Brother Martin football. They’re really cheap and don’t want to pay stadium fees so they’d rather play away games and make the parents/fans travel.

They played Ouachita twice in a row away, they repeated play St Pauls away, they St Thomas More twice in a row away.

I don't think this is going to be a very good BM team, either. If they can find a way to get the ball to Royal in open space more, they could be dangerous. They just didn't really try to do that very much last year after the early part of the season, while the defense got gashed. Snap it to him. Hand it to him. He can't just be a decoy.

I’m just gonna go ahead and say it, but that list maybe accurate in terms of the LHSSA power ranking formula. But it’s kind of an odd thing to see from Catholics point of view. They play one of the top teams, if not the top team in Mississippi on the road, a nationally ranked team in Carrollton out of Georgia and end the season with Legacy out of Texas. Now, I personally don’t think that legacy is going to be on par with this other two but it’s still a tougher game than many other teams will play all year. Throw in Ruston on the road , throw in Dunham with Haven, throw in central and throw in Zachary and that’s a tough schedule regardless of what the strength schedules numbers say.
