There's an interesting element of simple sexual competition in this stuff. Once you notice there people would be the sort to claim heterosexual men should be attracted to Lea Thomas and heterosexual women should think Elliott Page is desirable.
Which is frankly nonsense since the root purpose of sex drive is to actually reproduce. These people don't actually believe this stuff. They just want to control others - while simultaneously preferring partners that can provide either good genes or resources.

This pisses me off so much as a woman. All the NCAA powers that be (mostly men), and so many stupid voices in the "media space" are just big mad that cute, smart young women are making the big bucks. The men thought it would just give that great football or basketball player a little spending money. They never envisioned this. The "media" is pissed that the black girls are getting whatever magic they feel they deserve.
