Every story I hear about him makes it sound like it was so cool that he did things that would get his arse kicked playing at a muni. I get that he was a driving force in turning around Europe's Ryder Cup fortunes, but he sounded like a complete dick to be with on the course.

Payne had that reputation for a lot of his career, but by the time he died, he had turned that around. His actions at the US Open and Ryder Cup in 1999 confirm that.
