They’re the most “prove it to me” team
They’ve gotta get over the hump eventually for me to think they can

They beat SMU and Boise State, and lost to a Notre Dame team who relied on everything except the forward pass to win games.
Of course they'll be a good team, but they are massively overrated. They are a shoe in to lose 2 games in the regular season, even with that cupcake schedule.

For sure that’s a knock. I’m not saying he’s at the top tier, but people bash him like Penn State should be doing so much better. I think this is what Penn State is.
Hypothetical…if his record against top 10 teams is 7-13, but you sprinkle in 4 losses to the Illinois and Northwestern type teams, does that change the narrative?

They are the aTm of the Big 10

Probably a lot honestly. He still needs to prove he can win the bigger games.
I think he wins 10 games like he should every year, but he isn't winning 12 ever (in the regular season).

I agree, in those 20 games, he likely was favored in 5 or so.

Maybe that's a good comparison. Could be Ole Miss or even like Tennessee? They are always good, but never good enough (Tenn was in the 90s of course, just like PSU)

Same song, different verse with Penn State - they recruit pretty well and are going to out-athlete most teams on their schedule outside of Ohio State and Oregon. People conveniently forget that they won CFP games against SMU and Boise State before losing to Notre Dame, another perennial big game loser, so Penn State still has to prove they can beat the best teams in college football before they can be considered a true contender

LSU fans seem to forgot how mediocre burrow was his first year there
ANY QB that was forced to play in LSU's antiquated/risk-averse offensive approach would have been, at best, "mediocre". The potential for Burrow to be great was there in 2018. It was LSU that was holding him back. That's why you saw the MASSIVE improvement in 2019 when LSU completely changed its offensive approach.

They remind me of Texas under Mack Brown before they got over the hump.
Mack went 9-3, 9-5, 9-3, 11-2, 11-2, 10-3, 11-1 in his first 7 seasons. They racked up wins @Nebraska, @Kansas State, pretty much owned aTm…bowl wins over LSU, Washington, Michigan. None of it was “big”.
Vince Young arrived and changed all that, and that momentum carried for another 4 years.

There's about 4 teams with the depth to compete for a natty and Penn State ain't one
Who? It’s more wide open this year than even last year.
Texas and Ohio State are both starting unproven QB’s, with Buck States being a freshman with reports of him not convincingly winning the job. Arch is a high level prospect, but he still only has 2 career starts (War damn hawks) and Texas lost 4 o lineman to the draft.
Bama is playing a game manager qb that may kind of suck. LSU is LSU, Georgia will be very good, but they’ve got less of a talent advantage than years past. Clemson is poised to be very good this year with Klubnick and two first rounders on the d line, but do you really think they’re unbeatable? Miami seems to be the other ACC contender, but they’ve got Butthole eyes Beck who’s mid AF at qb. Oregon is starting a new qb, are we sure he’s good? Wasn’t great at UCLA.
Point is, if there was a year for Penn State, this is it. Return most of their players. Allar ain’t great, but he’s got nearly 40 starts under his belt and isn’t going to be bad. I think they like what they did in the portal at WR. They may still not win it all, but coming into the season, there’s reason to feel good about where they stand

Make it make sense.
It’s hard to explain to someone that thinks the past perfectly predicts the future or affects the future.
They are ranked high because they have a lot of players including their QB returning from a team that made the final four last year. There doesn’t appear to be a truly dominant team and “the usual suspects” Bama, UGA tOSU all have questions. It will work itself out

They got to the semifinals last year
To be fair they beat SMU and Boise St., and lost the moment they played against a good opponent.

I was going to compare them to Clemson with Dabo pre 2015

Rankings don't really matter anymore. 12 make the playoffs and have a chance.

They’re Penn State so they’re always overrated

They got to the semifinals last year
We can stop pretending that they were one of the 4 best teams last year. It’s the same as pretending Notre Dame was one of the 2 best. It’s just nonsense. They were each closer to #10 than #1
In his 11 years at PSU, how many times has Franklin beaten a team that was more talented than his? 2016 OSU is the only one I can think of, and Clemson beat the shite out of them (31-0) in the semis. They are the definition of pretenders until something drastic changes

Pray tell, who was better than ND other than Ohio State? I can think of maybe 1 team.
