With my daughter playing, and us watching a lot of college and AUSL, I’m shocked there aren’t rules in place to require pitchers to wear face masks.

After they release the ball, they are likely close to 35-37 feet from the plate with an exit velocity around 70 mph.

Yet, AUSL games and product have been impressive.

Of course she'd get hit in the face and not some battle-axe looking broad.

One of the top comments on that video says:

"f this was a men’s soccer game, he would be incapacitated for seven years "

I also love how there are a ton of comments about how long LeBron would be out after that.

She even tried to make a play on the ball after getting hit.

That was more upper left pec/neck/chin but yeah, could have been ugly if eye socket or nose.

Is there a reason this is mentioned just for softball? Isn’t there similar danger for a baseball pitcher.

My perception is the softball pitcher is potentially a little more upright and forward facing due to the nature of the throwing motion.

I don’t want a female getting her face messed up for sure, but I don’t think it is a great result for a baseball pitcher also.

60 feet vs 35-40 feet?

I see pitchers destroyed in 10u / 12u softball regularly, and they’re required to wear masks.

In college and pros, not required. Why I brought up softball, but agree risk exists in baseball too.

It's called a "soft" ball for a reason.

Barely weighs more than a wiffle ball.

Ehh no big guy a softball weighs more than a baseball.

That being said there is a difference in 115mph EV (baseball) and 85 (softball). Ultimately at the college and professional level the players make the decision.

115mph vs 85mph. Both get on you quick though.

It’s called softball because it was invented as a way to play baseball indoors. It evolved into an outdoor sport with a unique hardball that plays slower due to wind resistance.
