These same "kids" that can join the military and go to war and die for us? These same kids who fuel one of if not the most lucrative sports businesses in the US?

Why do you hate adults participating in the free market? Are you a communist?

Just because it’s pay to play why is it faux NIL?

The players winning court cases the past couple of years would not be winning if they were claiming they would only lose out of earning their true NIL. Their true NIL should cross over to various schools and into real life as long as it actually maintains its same value on its own. LF7 lost out on true NIL. Olivia Dunne lost out on true NIL for her 1st year at LSU.

Some of what the players are earning is NIL, but a lot is not.
quote:

Name, image and likeness (or NIL) are the three elements that make up “right of publicity”, a legal concept used to prevent or allow the use of an individual to promote a product or service. For example, if an athlete’s photograph is taken while wearing an athletic brand, and that brand uses the photo to promote their products without the athlete’s consent, that athlete could claim the brand is in violation of the right of publicity. The right of publicity is generally used to protect against the misuse of an individual’s name, image and likeness for commercial promotion.

Make all the money you want from car dealerships and trial lawyers.

You get five years to make that money. And if you transfer, I still think you should sit a year. Let your new NIL dude pay a year for you to sit.

Who pays for the ad space that this groups have been buying? Who paid to make this many different ads and are the coaches and former coach doing this for free?

Following the money isn't easy but it needs doing.

Congratulations, you just identified the culprit.

The athletes have power because schools want to win and are willing to break rules to do so.

The NCAA gets a BILLION dollars a year simply for the rights to allows CBS/Turner to broadcast the NCAA Tournament. That's ONE event.

The major conferences have TV contracts that pay them at or near a BILLION dollars for the rights to broadcast sporting events of the member schools. They primary value in those contracts is to broadcast football and men's basketball games.

The schools don't just want to win. They want to make a frickLOAD of money. But they also want to do so by pretending the players are just "student athletes" who contribute so little to the entertainment value that waiving the expense of attending college and some other benefits is equal value. A scholarship isn't even income. It's waving the fee for requirement to enter a marketplace. It's not unlike an employer paying an employee's professional license fee.

One of the big problems is we have a lot of people in the discussion to don't actually understand what NIL is in a legal sense. It is NOT a "salary" to play. While in practice very much is an inducement to play for a certain school, it is not a wage being paid by the school. If Rasin' Canes, All Star Ford, Nike, and/or Riverside Towing want to pay a player $2M, $8M, $80M for the use of the players NIL, I don't see any legal way in which the school, conferences, government can "cap" that. It is a private transaction between a business and a person.

We also have so many bozos constantly use the term "salary cap" without understanding that in order to have one you first have to (a) have a "salary"...which college athletes do not get and (b) it has to be collectively bargained. The NFL did not just one day decide to implement a salary cap. It was negotiated and agreed to by the players and owners.

The schools want the money. The fans want the entertainment. Winning is more entertaining than losing. The train keeps rolling

Can’t wrap my head around why colleges and fans have to give in to 18-25 ups. Frick’em. They don’t have the power unless given to them.
what else could they be doing and making that kind of cash - or the value of their room. board, perks, tuition, healthcare

nothing....

They should not be making money anyway, Coaches are paid to bring in money by making the teams better, its a REAL JOB. I never thought they should make what they do, but Saban made Alabama tons of money.

These players get free schoolings, why should the University make the money and not the player? Who lost money building up the programs for 100 years from the 1880s to the 1980s before the REALLY started making money when they were allowed to enter into contracts with networks?

The Colleges built stadiums on THEIR OWN DIME, they paid buses & planes to carry them to these college games on their own dime, they paid for the scholarships losing money for years, and now after investing for years you think sone high school player should come in making millions CLASSIC LIBERAL THINKING.

Just like boxing, if they do not rectify this fans will GO AWAY, I quit watching in 2019. They will either pass this or it will go to PAY TO WATCH, and lose fans just like boxing did.

And who suffers from this BS Greed by Lib Lawyers and paid off judges? The rest of the players in other sports, which they will have to start cutting funds for because CBB and CFB paid for those sports.

So, this dingy thinks high school students should come in a reap the rewards that Colleges deserve because the INVESTED MONEY for over 100 years in the College Sports Atmosphere, building THEIR BRAND, no one goes to watch these kids, they go to support a brand, of TRADITION. Do away with scholarships, I will watch, I will not watch this BS, anyone who does is a chump imho.

Its like watching the NFL when next year half the team could leave and you might get in anther 25 players to fill the roster, who in the hell wants to watch that BS?

Well that’s false, otherwise LSU would be rolling out Southeastern’s roster due to it being a lot cheaper lol

Effectively they are employees. I don’t see how you can have age/tenure restrictions.

The universities/administrators wanted to get stupid rich off of college sports. The players now want it too. They either all go after the money (players that actually generate revenue) and basically turn college sports into a pro league or no one gets paid.

There is nothing wrong with people participating in the free market, however people are forgetting about the other 95% of collegiate athletes who don't play football or basketball. Those sports will be cut because athletic departments won't have the funding if they are to compete with other schools in the top money earning sports.

college sports has nothing to do with capitalism and socialism. None of these kids should get paid to play or they are ineligible.

Where exactly is the hypocrisy?

Collegiate athletes were supposed to be amateurs that were getting ready to either become professionals in football or professionals in something else they were going to school for. In return for their troubles they received a free education. Coaches were making money because that was, you know, their job. The schools were making money so they could invest it into their campus and improve their athletic and education programs.

You completely ignored what I said in my last post.

I understand what amateur means and how you want it to apply to the situation, but you are classifying people as amateurs simply to justify your entertainment needs whole ignoring any other obvious context as to what we expect of "kids" the same age.

It's college sports. They arent forced to play it. If they dont like receiving only scholarships covering $150, 000 educations and the free training and support, they are free to go play elsewhere.
