Yep. USM loved to be the turd in the punch bowl for the likes of Cal, Louisville, TCU, Nebraska, etc.

May not win them all but they would put up enough of a fight that even a team that won tended to come out the worse for it.

CUSA will be done. I don’t want to hear any of this “they’ll add FCS schools” crap. First of all, schools like James Madison have to be interested in moving up first and foremost, which I’m not sure they are. I haven’t heard any talk of any FCS trying to make the jump. If Marshall and Southern Miss go to the SBC, you better believe other programs will try as well. Schools like WKU and MTSU are prime for the MAC. I just don’t see how CUSA survives.

Also, i just don’t see a reason why UTEP would stay in a conference on the east coast. That’s just unrealistic.

UTEP probably looks at the Mountain West simply because they don’t really have any travel partners left.

If your nearest travel partner is UT San Antonio, that’s a long fricking way from El Paso.

For the record Sun Belt is an awesome name for a conference.

Exactly. For football, JMU has a great stadium and is equipped to make the jump in that respect….but they still have to be willing to commit to increasing funding to the program for the additional scholarships.

I think the WAC’s long-term goal would be to get back to an FBS conference now that they started sponsoring football again. But that league would have a long way to go seeing as it’s a mix of long-time FCS programs and others that recently just moved up to DI.

I’m wondering what exactly NMSU is doing… Las Cruces isn’t far from UTEP. Are they guaranteed into the new WAC for football with all their other sports there???

I would think NMSU would be an easy add for the WAC. No one else wants them.

It was a different world for me to walk into so many stores in ABQ and other towns across New Mexico and be completely unable to find any gear for NMSU or UNM, as we intended that as a souvenir for a relative.

Couldn’t find UNM gear at the Walmart right next to UNM’s campus, for Christ’s sake.

Who would have ever thought that the Sun Belt would be one of the last G5 conferences left standing. I love how Tech fans think they’re some big powerhouse, when in reality, they’re nothing more than a Sun Belt school. Just a tad bit better than their friend 30 minutes to their east

Hattiesburg is a cool college town. Beautiful campus area. You’d think that they would invest more in their football program especially being in the middle or close to so many cities that produce a lot of football talent.

That is the thing - LaTech has been at this conference deal since 1987. Go back and look at the conference history.

They have never played 1 down of SBC football.

LaTech has done just fine as an independent and has done just fine with conferences out west.

There will be more shakeups and maybe Tech is rolling the dice and not wanting to be tied to the SBC.

Name 1 team that has ever moved upward from the SBC? You can’t

Yeah frick Tech for trying not to settle for mediocrity. Louisiana Tech has made the right decisions every step of the way to better their program. The one misstep was Tommy’s comments. He’s gone and was demoted to associate ad at Vandy. Joining the WAC was the right move. Joining C-USA was the right move. Tech was failed by Conference USA’s leadership. They aren’t in this position because they failed to build a program, they are here because Judy let C-USA crumble and the teams that caused the crumble were bailed out because of their market.

Tommy’s comments have been passed on down through the administration for decades. It’s the same mantra that Derek Dooley stated as well. That opinion has been shared by fans, admin and boosters.

So now LaTech might find itself woefully holding the bag with no friends to help them out.

It’s a shame to abandons your oldest rivals and pretend to be something your not.

this... they should have one third of MS all to themselves, including the growing Coast area... it's not like Ole Miss and Miss St. light the world on fire

And they’re close enough to really recruit the New Orleans area and Mobile/Pensacola area.

USM is well past embarrassment at this point.

The school has been heading downward for about 20 years due to administration issues and the athletic department is broke, in part due to mishandling the football program after Larry Fedora left for UNC.

This. They had a chance to be relevant again if Todd Monken had stayed but he bolted for the NFL. Can't say. I blame him. He got USM to the C-USA championship, though.

I doubt Hall is going to turn things around. But the first step is getting out of C-USA. A lot of the big dogs back in the early 00's were proactive and left when they saw the warning signs but USM stayed and it's burned them and their program now for years.

Ironic coming from a UL-L fan!

He has a point - at least LaTech never settled and always strived for improvement. You can’t get better if you always settle for par.

Now that said, LaTech has the toughest short term challenge of any CUSA, SBC, MWC, AAC and MAC team.

It's not as much the decisions they have made as much as the "smugness" at which they have done them. No one can blame La Tech for trying to better its athletic program or brand. But from Dooley saying "no Sun Belt schools" to Tommy's "Move up to a level like CUSA" spiel, there is a level of etiquette to present yourself without having to resort to taking cheap shots at another conference especially when it's a conference that Tech might have to fall back to.

There is a reason it is called the “hub city.” It is about 3-4 hours away from a bunch of other big cities which, in turn, made it easy for them to recruit a bunch of second and third tier talent from across the south. Lotta hidden gems went through there like Adalius Thomas as a result.
