I completely missed on Josh Allen, Kyler Murray, and Lamar. I assumed busts even after their first year. Wrong.

But I figured from the start Matt Leinart, Bryce, Trubisky benefited from media hype.

I’ve come to learn it’s hard as shite to predict who will be good and who won’t.

- I really thought Bryce Young would be decent.
- I thought Tua would be elite.
-I thought Hurts was a huge reach where Eagles drafted him.
- Thought there was no chance JaMarcus Russell wasn’t going to be a solid NFL QB at worst with his intangibles
- Bought in to the Jimmy Clausen hype and thought he would be good
- Thought RG3 would change the game
- Thought Lamar was going to be Vince Young 2.0.

So many different factors at play that transcend “how fricking strong and accurate is this guy’s arm?”

My biggest "right" was Jamarcus. My biggest "wrong" was Leaf over Manning.

There are so many factors that go into a QB being good or not. And too many QBs get thrown to the wolves and ruined by bad team development. I have inclinations, but I’ve given up trying to figure out who will or won’t work out.

That being said, my biggest right was Peyton Manning. Biggest wrong was probably Heath Shuler, and Lamar Jackson after his first year. I never got the hype around Tua. Still don’t.

I met and hung out with Jamarcus a few times at an alumni event when he was a player. After having a conversation with him I thought to myself “how is this person passing academically?” and thought the NFL QB position would be too cerebral for him. Sounds mean, but just the truth. So I got that one.

To an earlier poster, I also thought Ryan Leaf would be an all-pro. Whoops. But to be fair, a complete mental break is hard to predict.

There are so many variables, it's hard to predict. One thing 'busts' seem to have in common is that they end up with shite teams, a natural consequence of being a high draft pick. It's doubly impressive when a QB goes high in the draft to a shite team and has success relatively quickly. Like Joe Burrow.

As a lifetime Bengals fan, the biggest bust was Alili Smith. He was another level of bad and set the franchise back even more than it was at the time, if that’s possible.

I was super high on Cutler from first time I saw him play at Vandy. His arm strength was insane, he could be accurate and I figured that anybody who goes to Vandy is studious and a hard worker. So much for that. He could have been an all-time great if he'd given a shite.

Leinart was really slow and not known to have a great arm, so I knew his ceiling was low. Thought he'd at least be a career backup/ game manager type.

Bryce is still too early to tell for me. He looks bad now, but look at Sam Darnold in a different situation. Who knows if that holds.

Trubisky I thought was going to be an all-pro based on measurables, speed, arm strength. His mind is what's holding him back I'm guessing.

Nah I’m secure in both good predictions and bad. Part of the fun.

I thought Tim Couch was going to be a starter in the pros for a long time. The Browns ruined him

I completely whiffed on Josh Allen but definitely happy to see him succeed in the league.

This is a guy who flashed all the physical attributes (how many times do guys get overdrafted for this), but played questionable competition and completed 56% of his passes , looking erratic. Not once did I think he could somehow become more accurate against the best in the world

Smith didn't set the franchise back any further than David Klingler. Klingler was a 6th overall pick.

I've been so wrong about so many guys. I thought Joey Harrington was going to be a solid NFL QB, I was so wrong.

I was right about Josh Allen though, the offense he played in Wyoming had him throwing deep constantly. Everyone was worried about his completion rate and accuracy. Figured once he got into an offense that wasn't asking him to take low percentage shots all the time, he would improve and look great since he has all the tools.

End of the day, the bust rate for first rounders is over 50%. If the pros and scouts can't do better than that, what chance do we have?
