Let's look at Football State Championships for the 2008 season:

5A: Destrehan (Public)
4A: Belle Chasse (Public)
3A: Lutcher (Public)
2A: John Curtis (Private)
1A: South Plaquemines (Public)

4 of the 5 were Public.
In 2007, 3 of the 5 were Public.
In 2006, 3 of the 5 were Public.

10 of the last 15 Football State Champs were Public Schools.

Rex, can you think of any advantages that Public Schools have over Private that could explain this dominance?

I didn't notice that all of the state titles last year were from the Greater NOLA area. Katrina sure did a number on the LHSAA

Katrina made a 1A power that will win many championships. South Plaquemines is an enormous land area to pull players from.

Well, Katrina is responsible for the creation of South Plaquemines. I wonder how good Boothville-Venice, Port Sulphur and whatever the third school that they merged would be.

When St. Thomas Aquinas of Florida smashed Upper Arlington of Ohio 52-7 on Saturday (and it would have been a lot worse if the starters hadn't been pulled early), at least four players who played significant roles on the winning side were at different high schools last year.

Why public schools willingly set themselves up as punching bags for teams with such an unfair competitive advantage is beyond me.

This does not happen in Louisiana. If a student transfers to a private school in Louisiana after starting high school for a public school he has to sit out 2 years (technically 2 years the rest of the current season and the next season). If they transfer from a public school to a private school their freshman year they have to sit out for 1 year (unless ruled eligible by the LHSAA). Case in point Hurricane Katrina (kids were allowed to play for other schools without waiting because in most cases their schools were no longer open).

So while your argument hold for Florida private schools. In Louisiana it does not hold up.

I remember reading the stud Belle Chasse QB Blake Matherne was from Boothville-venice

quote:

“I tell people this all of the time that Hurricane Katrina actually was the best thing that ever could have happened to me,” Matherne said. “I mean that respectfully. I was forced to move to a bigger school. It gave me more opportunities to compete against better competition. I was able to take advantage of them.”

Matherne was projected to start as a freshman at Boothville-Venice, named for the two communities located near the mouth of the Mississippi River. When Hurricane Katrina destroyed the school, Matherne was forced to move 70 miles northwest to Belle Chasse.

Both parties benefited, with Matherne earning Most Valuable Player honors in the state championship game and Offensive Player of the Year recognition on the Class 4A All-State team.

I don't remember them or Boothville-Venice ever really being any good, but wasn't Port Sulphur usually pretty good?

26, but I was also in a completely different part of the state, so that probably has something to do with me never hearing much about them also.

Another thing, does anyone think if it wasn't for John Curtis and Evangel that this argument would EVER come up.

Fact 15 of last 20 State Champs were Public Schools. Of those 5 privates 4 of them were either John Curtis or Evangel. Parkview is the only other private school to win a state championship in the last 4 years and it took a choke job from Westlake for it to happen.

All three schools were powers at one time or another but Port Sulphur most recently. Mainly because of their coach (who is the current coach at South Plaq.)

That, too.

Back in the 80s and early 90s, those programs were really good. Unfortunately for them, they had to go up against Curtis a lot...

at that time I had only heard of schools in my area, and then really only the ones we (i went to a K-12 catholic school) played against every year.

This thread is making me excited that it's football season again. HS football is, obviously, major shite in Louisiana, and I'm desperate to see Catholic bounce back after missing the playoffs for the first time in 20 years.

Curtis and Evangel aren't the first private schools to have a great deal of success in LA.

Curtis and Evangel got the people to want schools to play at their population because certain schools grew tired of losing to them.

No they are not the first to have success. But John Curtis has 3 times as many state titles as anyone else in the state and has been around for only about 35 - 40 years. Evangel is #2 in state title numbers and has only been around for about 20 years. I personally do not have a problem with either program. But I think if not for this unprecedented success you would not see the complaining you see.

Programs like STM and Catholic may enjoy regional success year in and year out but as for as state titles......well you get my point.

they've got some talent in their junior class from what I heard, and a whole lot of talented freshmen (who obviously won't see the field this year). Their defense has done well in the scrimmage and the jamboree, even with a new d-coordinator.
