I think he was a last day flip from Cal.
He never should have flipped. Prob got offered some cash and regretted it
So there's a lot of gossip over what happened here. The understanding was that it wasn't 50-50 or 60-40 Cal over Oregon, he was very solidly Cal until the last second, and the reason for his flip is hotly debated among insiders at Cal who have some knowledge of last-minute conversations.
With entrenched starter Mendoza now transferring to Indiana, Cal has a desperate need for a starting QB. So we'll see if he's headed straight back to Cal or if he's really going to keep looking around.
Cal's offensive scheme / coaching will be coming from Bryan Harsin and Nick Rolovich. Should he put his faith in these guys?

Would be the best thing for the sport, unfortunately the Supreme Court has already said that player movement can’t be restricted. Only thing that will fix the current mess is making players employees and having them sign multi-year contracts
I think you are right. The rulings on most of these related issues involve antitrust issues and the Sherman Act. So if the NCAA or the SEC or a group of colleges agree to limit the playing time of transfers that would be considered an antitrust violation. At least that is what my nonlawyer brain thinks the situation is.
The solution will either be contracts or antitrust exemption granted by Congress (which I thought they already had but apparently not).

Ohio State broke the program.

1. Anyone who says the Supreme Court was “wrong,” get back to me on how you plan to get them to see the error of their ways and do an about face.
2. I asked this on the Alabama board, given that players can bug out if they don’t get their chance right away instead of having to wait for their chance, is there any point to programs trying to assemble a room full of 5-star quarterbacks? There aren’t enough footballs for everyone.

The sitting a year rule was not a full ruling I thought. It was put in as a stay and then the NCAA said screw it and just lifted it.
Reality is that if you will not allow any accountability for the players, then just end the charade and stop college athletics as a scholarship or tied to universities. Let pro leagues fund their own farm systems and focus universities on academics again.
ESPN, ADs, coaches and players collectively in their selfishness/greed have ruined the entire system.
Why should my alma maters need to cater to these spoiled brats at all levels. End it all, fire all the ADs and AD employees and go back to club sports.

This is what is needed if there is going to be any sanity.

I would not hold your breath waiting for one, no one save Tommy Tuberville who is not exactly a disinterested party cares about it, and Congress has been regretting giving MLB one for 100 years. You will note they haven’t given any more for sports.
This isn’t a liberal/conservative thing either, I’ll remind you that the main Supreme Court decision in this was 9-0 and that noted Trotskyite Brett Kavanaugh signaled that he was ready to give the players even more.
This will eventually sort itself out and reach an equilibrium. Fans just need to stop driving themselves crazy thinking some knight is going to ride in on a white horse and restore what they think should be the proper order of things. What was is not coming back.

Hard to support players when they do shite like this. At least the coaches have 'buyouts'.

Damn Oregon won if that’s the case. Would be hard to win with a QB this dumb and delusional.
You say that but... looking back... as much as I hate the very idea of it... I'm pretty sure most Aggies and even Sumlin himself would admit we should have let Kyler Murray be the starter over Kyle Allen from day 1 even though he clearly was not ready and flat out did not deserve to take that job right away.
What's funny about it is Kyle Allen was exactly the same way and was looking to transfer out when Kenny Hill beat him out. He only stayed b/c Hill imploded by mid season thinking he could perform at a high level while partying like Johnny Football.
Still amazes me that Sumlin had two NFL QBs at the same time (Allen is a career backup but still) and somehow chased both of them off in the same week b/c he wasn't willing to commit to one of them as the starter.

If I’m a premier program I’m honestly not going to devote a ton to scouting and finding HS qbs. There will be a plethora of guys who’ve proven they can play college qb looking to transfer every single year.
The best qbs each year are typically on their 2nd or even 3rd teams
