In shooting a 78 in the final round, Norman had four bogeys and five double-bogeys.

I don’t think this is right. That means he was -8 on the other holes. That was would be the most bat shite insane round ever.

Yeah no doubt. Gut wrenching thinking about it and I didn’t even know the guy at the time.

Van de Velde was a dumbass up 3 strokes taking out a driver rather than a safe club into the fairway for pretty much guarantee of the win minimum by a double bogey at worst.

Came here to post about Jean van de Velde.

Had a 3 shot lead going into the 18th at the British Open and fell apart Happy Gilmore style on one hole.

It’s the golf equivalent of having a 7+ run lead going into the bottom of the 9th and still blowing the game.

Here’s a great example of the problem with the either you “win it all” or you suck mentality in sports. The rankings in golf or tennis are NOT like the AP poll in college football.

Watching it live, I really felt bad for Norman. He just completely fell apart.

Me too. Watching him shaking his arm standing over putts only to grip and miss them. Rough.

What's so crazy is that Norman lost by FIVE STROKES after leading by SIX going into the final round. It's not like Faldo made a crazy charge and barely caught him. He ran away with it.

Rory had a 4 shot lead in 2011 and lost by TEN, crazy.

ETA: Sorry, should have read through the thread first.

How many of you know that Van De Velde was safely over the burn in front of the 18th green on his 2nd shot but the ball took an insane hop off the grandstand railing and went back across the burn. That is what really fricked him.

Terrible bad luck. If that ball stays anywhere greenside he is playing 3 and is an easy winner.

As much as I want to feel bad for Norman, my sympathy goes so far. Dude has what appears to be a six foot python sleeping peacefully in his trousers.

I actually feel a little bad for Faldo. He’s shots 67, wins his 3rd Green Jacket but can’t really celebrate, he’s just gives Norman a hug after and all anyone remembers is Norman’s choke and then next year Tiger takes over

The biggest wasted talent in golf IMO. Was #1 so long he should’ve won at least 6 majors. Until Scott won, the aussies always seemed cursed at Augusta.

The 2009 British Open (Watson blowing it on 18) was a bigger letdown for me though.

unfortunate luck, but it’s not like we’re talking about Watsons 2nd into 18 at turnberry. Van de Velde still had every opportunity in the world to collect himself

I think Woods, like Bama and Brady have warped peoples perceptions. Only 12 golfers in history have won 6 majors. Norman won 2 Open Championships and finished 2nd in the other 3 a total of 7 times. It is a shame he didn’t pull a couple of those out 4 puts him in the top 20 all time. 29 golfers have won 4+

ETA of the guys with at least 4 majors 7 were before World War 1 and one other between 1916-25. Plus Walter Hagen won 11 btwn 1914-29. That’s 12 of them

Crazy that this was only a year before Tiger won his first. They were a generation apart.

It was a thing

He was the Buffalo Bills of golf. A runner up time after time in spite of his great talent.

Sports are fickle. In an alternate universe maybe Mize doesn't hit that chip shot and an unjinxed Norman wins ten majors.

That fricking shark logo was everywhere in the 90s. Seemingly every middle-aged, high socks, Bermuda shorts, white tennis shoes guy in America had an article of clothing with that logo on it.

The fad, however, was fleeting. Tiger and Nike basically stole Norman's true genius, his golf marketing, and blew it into oblivian.

I still love pre-Tiger mid-90s golf though. It was right before technology and long drive Contests took over the game.
