You are forgetting the University of South Carolina's identity crisis. In the late 80s early 90s they tried to adopt "The USC" which failed since nobody outside Columbia (and few inside) saw it as "THE" USC and they went back to USC. Then a few years ago they switched the spirit mark to U of SC which failed and they quickly returned to USC on the spirit mark. Maybe next they will use "University of frick you we were founded first SC".

As sad of a “tradition” as it is, let them have it.
I’m personally a bigger fan of the tradition of them getting embarrassed by the SEC. When it comes to OSU, that is THE tradition.
