Kickers get better over the years just like the other players. I watched film of our 1941 win over Alabama, I didn’t see many back shoulder fades and such. Most of the time on long pass plays, it looked like the QB’s were just chucking it downfield hoping a receiver might catch it.
I remember years ago being shocked when someone kicked a 50 yd FG. I also remember when linemen were too slow to catch offensive players from behind.

NFL is as good as ever. I love it so much. Threads like this baffle me.

Yep. That is today's NFL.

I'm not in love with it.

There’s nothing wrong with field goals.

Pass interference being a spot foul is ruining the game because a field goal is now the only tool needed to win the game at the end.

It is somewhat absurd, isn't it?

wider hash marks can make angles tough.

The NFL moved the hashmarks more towards the middle of the field to help the Offense and FG kicking. Perhaps that hash marks rule could be modified in order to make FGs more difficult.

Right now, too many of the games boil down to whomever has the ball last - that team wins by FG. Even if there's only 60 seconds left on the clock, that's usually enough for an Offense to receive a Kick Off then drive down far enough to kick the game winner.

I'm not in love with this game model.

Do they also need to adapt rules to get passing yardage back down to the levels that they were 50 years ago and make those numbers less common again?

Yes! Good idea! Make them play with a Soccer Ball! Let's see you complete a 35 yard pass with that, sucker!

Just because kickers are better doesn't mean you have to change the rules. The game just changes with it.

I swear kickers get better when they get to the NFL. Vikings rookie Will Reichard already has a handful of 50+ yarders and is 9-9. He was great at Bama, but definitely wouldn't have these stats.

I think they should install the goal posts on some sort of rail and have them move back and forth during field goal attempts.

Something like: 20 yard or less FG = 3 points 20-40 = 2 points 50+ = 1 point

It’s counterintuitive to make the easier field goals worth more and the harder field goals worth less

but it makes more sense on the rules of the game

Touchback:

-move a ball 70 yards, 6 points
-move the ball 65 yards and kick a FG, 3 points
-move the ball 30 yards and kick a FG, 3 points?

it would make the game way more complex strategy wise at least.

right now the game is so simple and straightforward because it’s been figured out. even fans have figured out “crap we scored too fast” in close games, which is dumb

If not FGs that just means more punts.

Another way to fix is to use a heavier ball for FG tries. Keep all else the same but bring in big bertha ball to make it harder.
