One year only, anticipating tweaks to the rule as they go.

ESPN

Highlights:

- Kicker still kicks from the kicking team’s 35-yard line

- Rest of kicking team lines up on the opposing 40-yard line

- Minimum of 9 players on receiving team line up in “set-up zone” between 30- & 35-yard lines. (This means we will likely see planned plays on returns in terms of blocking.)

- Nobody but the kicker and returner(s) can move until the ball is received

- Touchbacks come out to the 30-yard line

- No fair catches

As long as no one tackles the ball carrier with a hip-drop tackle, this should be fine.

The sport is violent. All of a sudden they are shocked players get hurt while playing the violent sport.

As JJ Watt said

Just fast forward to the belts with flags on them

Not really all of a sudden… they have been harping on player safety for years now.

Also… “ONOZ, change!”

I think this is going to make returns more common and more interesting.

Imagine running a trap block against the kicking team’s formation and getting a hole like on a regular run play.

Are allowed, but have to be declared. No more surprise onsides.

If an onside is opted for, it will follow traditional NFL rules for that play.

Can’t believe people still get excited about the NFL. It’s a bland, boring product. Golf is more fun to watch. Know who loves the current year NFL and its coddling rules?

I am completely OK with the kickoff rule change. I am completely against the tackling rule change.

The new kickoff rules can add some much needed excitement to this area of the game. The tackling rule change could be the most significant rule change the NFL has ever made. This is NOT going to go over well.

I like the new rules. Will allow for no fair catches unless it goes to the end zone. Unless I missed something regarding the end zone. Most good kickers can get to the end zone.

Honestly, I kind of like it. It's a way to bring back kickoff returns to the NFL. Because that has absolutely sucked recently.

For reference, the guy with the most amount of kickoffs returned last year was Keisean Nixon, and that was with 30. The majority of guys all returned less than 20.

If you go back 20 years to 2004, the most amount of returns in the league was Dante Hall, with 68.

On the other side, I do hate that surprise on-side kicks has now been eliminated.

They institute this, but laugh at the officiating rules the XFL implemented.

It should add some strategy too, with the touchback giving even more yardage to the receiving team now.

Kicking teams may opt to try to pin the receiving team somewhere between the goal line and the 30 to eliminate that extra field position they are gifted by a touchback.

Probably will be determined by how successful receiving teams are in their set plays that they come up with to spring their returners free.

For an example of this, San Antonio’s XFL team last year ran a pull block to get an extra blocker on the edge and sprung their returner into plus territory. Kicking team had no clue what to do and got lucky to have someone chase him down on an angle.

The new spring league should do a hard pivot and do the following:

1. Declare the end of politics and woke BS in the league. Football only.

2. Adopt the rules of the game as they existed in the mid-80s and declare that they won’t be changing.

Within a few years they might eclipse the NFL in popularity.

I would be ok with a 4th and 20 as long as a penalty is not an automatic "turnover"

If not how many times will teams get the ball right back thanks to a horse shite PI or illegal contact?

NFL thinks they are invincible. They can shite on the game and folks will still tune in. So far they have been correct.
