Honestly, I kind of like it. It's a way to bring back kickoff returns to the NFL. Because that has absolutely sucked recently.

How many opening kickoffs of the past 15 years have featured an actual return?

I mean they’re still kicking off from the 35 which is the biggest issue.

The one thing about kickoffs that needs to change is the goddamn TV broadcast going to commercial after the kickoff when we just got back from goddamn commercial after the score (or halftime).

I don't know if anything triggers me more in televised sports.

Touchbacks go to the 30. Kicking teams may try and entice a return more often because of this.

How long until the NFL adopts the 3 point conversion?

I don’t like the tackle rule but I like this one, and I think others would too if they just looked at it with an open mind. The tackle rule has the potential to create flag fests. This has the potential to create excitement.

*whispers*

The XFL/UFL also has better extra point, overtime, and coach's challenge rules than the NFL.

Not really all of a sudden… they have been harping on player safety for years now.

Lol. How do you explain Thursday night games? You working in the NFL PR dept?

Why not just get rid of kick offs altogether at this point. Would be way better than this stupid rule

I don't understand why this rule is stupid.

It encourages more kickoff returns while reducing the chances of serious injury.

Seems like a win-win proposition to me.

Money. Simple as that.

I never said the NFL was perfect. Just saying they have adjusted rules constantly in the last two decades in the name of player safety, with mixed results.

This should be a win-win, as the poster above stated.

The only possible reason I could see people opposing this is they think the sport is perfect and should never be changed in any way. Which is silly. Positive change is good. The tackle rule isn’t positive. This is.

It will all be 2 hand touch 10 years from now with no kickoffs, punts, or passes allowed.

Because people see NFL "change" and they immediately bitch without comprehending the actual rule.

To be fair, most of the rule changes have sucked so I get it, but this one is actually bringing the kickoff closer to what it used to be than anything.

We'll see more returns, more creative play returns and certainly more return TDs.

I heard an interview with an NFL Special Teams coach yesterday that said they believe there were 500-1,000 touchbacks last season that would have been returned under the new rules, and your response to that is to call them soft?

WTF?

people just dont understand it right now. nerfing the onside kick even more is annoying but i think we'll see that go away in the next year or 2 in favor of a 4th and 15 attempt or something which honestly i think has potential to be even better than the pre rule change onside (before taking out running head starts and line shifts and such).

There were a grand total of two surprise onside kicks last year from 272 NFL games.
