The Nebraska spring game, one of the best attended in college football and a major revenue producer, likely won't be held going forward because of coach Matt Rhule's concern about other teams poaching his players.

"The word 'tampering' doesn't exist anymore," Rhule said Saturday at his midwinter news conference. "It's just an absolute free open common market. I don't necessarily want to open up to the outside world and have people watch our guys and say, 'He looks like a pretty good player. Let's go get him.'"

quote:

"I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that," Rhule said. "So you go out and bring in a bunch of new players and showcase them for all the other schools to watch? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me."

Six Nebraska players entered the transfer portal the week after last year's spring game.

Cant say I blame him. I've honestly thought about it the last couple of years how there's a spring portal window after a lot of spring games. If a backup performs well and someone else thinks he can start for them it's only logical

I imagine there will be a lot less open practices going forward too until the transfer rules are tightened up.

How does canceling the game change anything? What’s to stop a team from poaching players mid-season at this point?

Don't think players are eligible to transfer mid season? They still have to be enrolled at the university and can't start in the middle of the Fall semester.

He's blocking a publicly visible show...one less data point to evaluate what he has or doesn't.

The only way we can fix college football is to just let it get so out of hand that viewership declines and they have to rein it in.

Wow that might really impact their chance for a fourth win this year.

Tells me Rhule wants to GTFO of Lincoln. Nebraska has no chance whatsoever. Cherish 1995 Husker fans.

Why do you say that? OP says Nebraska lost 6 players to the portal last year the week after their spring game. Spring game provided other schools with film that led them to get Nebraska players to enter the transfer portal. He’s just trying to protect his program’s roster. Smart move IMO

Didn’t they have to give Dylan Raiola a strong arse offer just to get him to stay in Lincoln? Who was trying to pry him out of there?

What soft, loser mentality. If Kelly did that, I would go apeshit.

Very easy way to solve this. Have the players be employees and sign contracts

I thought the same thing during bowl season. ‘With all the veteran players opting out to get ready for the draft/don’t want to get hurt, it’s a great time to see the young guys play’. Yeah a great time to showcase your young guys for other teams to come poach them.
LSU fan: wow Trey Dez Green looked great in the bowl game. Can’t wait to see him next year.
Get ready to see him next year in an Ohio state uniform.

This is bullshite no team is making an offer to a kid after watching a spring game. Kids hit the portal after spring practice because they see the writing on the wall about the depth chart.

You don’t think they know when they’re #3 at school A but they’d be #1 getting huge NIL at school B?

A guy like Joe Burrow?

You’re not just competing for a starting spot against your depth chart, you’re competing against the rest of CFB
