What happens? Do you think next season that ESPN will use ND as a pawn for a month on its weekly television special? Then, in the penultimate episode, slide ND down a spot behind Alabama completely randomly to set up a cliffhanger. Simultaneously, have its on-air personalities on other shows frequently talk about ND / debate that ND shouldn’t get in to further drive ratings/clicks. And then, in the season finale of the weekly show, have a HUGE plot twist to knock ND out? Is that what ESPN will do next season in retaliation?

Oh wait…

So they are either barely top 10 or just outside the top 10

On3 has them at 15th

Either way, point still stands. Their brand isn’t what they think it is anymore

Further reinforcing the inevitable B1G/Fox vs. SEC/Disney war for the soul* of college football.

Is the CFP committee comprised of ESPN employees? I must be missing something. If so and ND is so valuable, ND would have gotten a bump over a smaller school like Miami.

What y'all are fighting back against isn't what people have been mad at ESPN about.

You're mad you didn't get to be in a 12 team playoff when you were on the bubble. I don't think Bama should have been taken over y'all but this overreaction is by you guys is a complete joke.

I'd much prefer the give them the NASCAR or NHL treatment after contracts weren't renewed, pretty much no coverage at all.

Are you really trying to turn this into a conspiracy?

You want people to believe ESPN decided to lose out on the ratings they'd get from having ND in the playoff in order to get a tiny bump in their CFB coverage? Really?

Clickbait, engagement farming over the last month while favoring a specific team/teams, and ESPN's revenue being the ultimate driving force behind a lot of the dumb shite we see in CFB today? Feels like that is a large portion of the complaints.

If the Committee had handled it differently there would be less complaints. No need to hash that out in here, but this reaction is to ESPN and the ACC. If you watched any game Saturday the agenda against ESPN was being pushed by everyone with a microphone. If you watched any ACC since the first ranking came out, especially one that ND was playing in on ESPN, it was non-stop bashing of ND. ESPN used ND to drive ratings, and then shite on them. The ACC is a big part of that too.

So no, ND isn't overreacting by telling them to get fricked now.

I promise you, the rules will be changed so ND won’t be left out unless they completely collapse.

Do I think the ACC pressured ESPN to shilling for them to ensure they get a team in the playoffs to preserve their reputation and the minimum $4m payout? Yes.

Do I think that the ACC rep on the committee and ESPN reps contacted the committee members to pressure them to include an ACC team over ND? Also yes.

Is this ND as presently constituted or ND once they would have accepted the bowl and then had 1/3 of the players opt out?

Good. ESPN is the biggest problem in all of sports and has effectively ruined college sports over the past 3 decades. Screw them.

Notre Dame’s ENTIRE SEASON TV revenue from NBC contract is $50m, but ESPN is gonna lose $35m for the PopTart bowl? (Game which will still be played btw)

lol at anyone thinks that $35m number is accurate

Notre Dame - in anger - forfeited millions of actual cash and more millions in free PR by opting out of the bowl. It was a short-sighted decision based out of frustration/anger. The only loser here, financially and otherwise, is Notre Dame.

Guessing it is not directly tied to ND's game alone, but what has transpired since. You have had a significant number of teams opting out of bowls including teams that were sub 0.500 teams.

Bowl season is going to be a major bust this year, and that is likely what the revenue loss being referred to is.

How much more would having Notre Dame play vs their replacement increased ticket prices? Also how much more likely were their fans to travel and stay in Orlando for the week/potentially visit Disney parks?

Wouldn’t put it past an AD making a short term emotional decision over the better logical choice after the decisions Ole Miss made these past few weeks.
