What if I told you that the red turf and the green turf on a baseball field have different surface temps inches away from each other at the same time.

They did for about 15 years, but changed it back to natural grass, I wanna say, when Matt Luke started up there.
Georgia Tech, Kentucky, and Mizzou are the only p4 "southern" teams that come to mind.
The Texas schools have a lot of artificial grass.

Ole Miss hasn't had Field Turf in probably 10+ years. The only Major College football program in the south I can think of with turf is Texas and I believe they may be switching to Grass soon. Don't use Vandy or Kentucky I don't consider either to be Major programs.

Money. Turf can be removed when the team on the road and the venue can be used for other events during that time. Stadiums with grass fields cannot do that unless they have a retractable field like Arizona and Las Vegas stadiums have.

When I was in high school it was a shocking but cool thing when the first high school in my area got turf. Now they seemingly all do. I get the long term maintenance costs etc but man it just feels wrong. Why in the rural south are we voluntarily making large fields of grass into concrete

We played in a baseball tournament in Panama City Beach one summer and my turf shoes quite literally melted to the turf, it was unbelievably hot

Several large high schools around Birmingham have turf fields, but pretty much all football is played on Thursday or Friday night. But it does get hot when other things are going on in the stadium. My oldest ran track, and at certain places on a Saturday meet in the late spring, they would have to set up tents in the stands to get some shade off of the turf. One in particular I remember her telling me her spikes felt like they were burning her feet. The turf field right next to a rubberized track, with a big concrete set of stands just traps all the heat. And that is in Alabama in May when it hasn't really hit the 90s yet. I can imagine with this heatwave we've had in Alabama and Tennessee and other southeastern states lately would make it even worse in a fully bowled in stadium.

I've always thought artificial fields both inside and out could take advantage of the basic method of earth tube cooling, like how off-grid or even the environmental Earth House designs utilize the ground underneath structures to cool them. It's said at just 15' underground, the constant temp is 58 degrees. This is done in Arizona home construction a lot. Venting 58 degree forced air on game days via controlled pvc "ducting" would be a massive relief on field and sidelines

Because you can host multiple events back to back to back and not have to worry about field conditions.
Also, maintenance is less.

It could be the turf on NFL fields is also hotter than some other turfs. I take readings on every game I have on turf and there are some common denominators on how hot different turfs get.

Those stadiums with the old school turf, like Busch stadium 2, three rivers,etc. Would hold heat like an oven. I can remember a player having his rubber spikes melt from the heat off the turf
