It seems with the climate, retractable roofs are necessary in our country now.

Climate hasn't changed that much. Concrete bowls trap heat during the summer. Details at 10.

And artificial surfaces hold more heat than natural ones, compounding the issue.

Or maybe they could just play on a grass field instead of turf?
I’m old enough to remember when turf was really only used in dome stadiums. Outdoor stadiums all had natural grass fields.
I haven’t seen any stories about college stadiums in the south having absurdly high temps on their fields. You’d think NFL teams could afford grass fields, especially in the south where its easier to keep the grass alive in December-January.

If you haven't been on one it's unbelievable how much different it is vs. natural grass. BREC's Oak Villa park has turf infields and grass outfields and you can feel the difference when transitioning.

Perhaps a league that endlessly promotes "player safety" should not have its players playing on concrete covered in plqtisc with black beads all over it??

Maybe start football season in October with preseason games in September? Would that help with the heat?

My kids had a soccer match on turf in the Miami area last season in May. You could legit see the waves of heat above the field. They both said they can actually feel it coming up through their cleats. I stood on the side close to the field and it was insanely miserable.
Honestly think it’s a matter of time before there are some serious heat related issues with this new youth turf obsession in the south.

Announcers were talking about it quite a bit at various games in week 2. A kid in the Iowa band was so hot they had a heart attack and died. LINK

My nephew had a tee-ball game on one this past Saturday. It was probably only around 85 out when the game was going on, but it felt like a blinding oven on the field. The turf was reflecting the sun's rays and heat. It was awful.

Afternoon summer ball games on turf in Texas (and I imagine anywhere in the south) felt like you were playing on the surface of the sun

The turf they're playing on is made up of shredded-up rubber tires. Not only does that shite get unbelievably hot and increase likelihood of ligament injuries, repeated and prolonged exposure to it can be very dangerous to your health.
It's crazy to me that the NFL owners refuse to install grass, especially after the World Cup showed it's the best way to go.
